Here is a list of locations on the Yangtze river, based on the logbooks of H.M.S. Bee.

Where possible, the English named locations on the Yangtze river have been resolved to present day locations using the following sources:
David Rumpsey Map Collection: China (1910) (http://www.davidrumsey.com/luna/servlet/detail/RUMSEY~8~1~37119~1210660?qvq=q:hong+kong;sort:Pub_List_No_InitialSort,Pub_Date,Pub_List_No,Series_No;lc:RUMSEY~8~1&mi=11&trs=181)
University of Texas: Map of Yangtze Kiang (1915) (http://www.lib.utexas.edu/maps/historical/yangtze_kiang_1915.jpg)
Names of places on the China coast and the Yangtze River (1904) (http://openlibrary.org/books/OL24179364M/Names_of_places_on_the_China_coast_and_the_Yangtze_River)
The China Pilot: comprising the coasts of China, Korea, and Tartary (1861) (http://books.google.nl/books?id=7r0BAAAAYAAJ&printsec=frontcover&hl=nl&source=gbs_ge_summary_r&cad=0#v=onepage&q&f=false)

Locations not found in the above mentioned references have been resolved by making a best guess based on the distance or time travelled as stated on a log page.

A question mark in the present day location indicates that a reference to the location has been found in one or more of the given resources, but no direct link to a present day location.

I've stumbled upon a book published in 1904, by order of the Shanghai Inspector General of Customs, titled "Names of places on the China coast and Yangtze River".

It is a 84 pages book listing names in English and Chinese and the customs district, prefecture and sub-prefecture it belongs to.

It can be viewed and/or downloaded here: "Names of places on the China coast and Yangtze River" (http://openlibrary.org/books/OL24179364M/Names_of_places_on_the_China_coast_and_the_Yangtze_River)

However, unless you know a way to enter the Chinese characters into Google maps, there is no direct link to present day names.
But perhaps it is useful as a place names spelling checker?

I found another one. Added bonus: pictures!

I can't trace every place name, but it confirms that some places actually existed, which is pretty much all I want most of the time.

Oh no - is that the one with the ACTION PHOTOGRAPH of a pirate being beheaded on page 52?  :( :(  Those of a nervous disposition should avoid that page altogether! Other than that its brilliant  8)

Many terms translate very easily - for example, "Yokohama-ko" is Yokohama Harbor, "Tateyama-wan" is Tateyama Bay, and so on. You can even break those names up even further - Tateyama-wan comes out as "Steep Mountain Bay" (or something!).

"Historical Lighthouses of Japan" (http://www.tokokai.org/hist/e/e-hist.htm) describes 23 lighthouses built in Meji era (1868-1912).

Caution : spellings may vary.
Example : "Oma saki Lt" logged at 2255 (http://oldweather.s3.amazonaws.com/ADM%2053-76428/ADM%2053-76428-0181_0.jpg) may probably be the lighthouse spelled "Omae Saki" in that website.

Should I say once again how much a curious guy like me enjoys OldWeather ?  ;)

Given that we have a Chinese translation service in this thread, I think we need a Japanese one too!

It turns out that many Japanese features are named quite easily, as it's often very easy to work out what type of feature they are. Below is a brief compilation, mainly from these sources:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Japanese_place_names
http://www.applet-magic.com/japanlan.htm
http://www.nauticalchartsonline.com/chart/zoom?chart=96943 (see Glossary, centre bottom)
The links contain additional words if you're really interested, but below are the more common nautical-related terms:

JapaneseEnglish
DakeMountain
GawaRiver
GyokoFishing Harbor
HamaBeach
HantoPeninsula
HotoOld
JimaIsland
KawaRiver
KaikyoStrait
KoHarbor or Lake
MisakiPoint or Cape
NadaSea or Gulf
NeRock or Reef
SakiPoint or Cape
SanMountain
SeShoal
ShimaIsland
ShinNew
SimaIsland
SuidoChannel
TakeMountain
TodaiLighthouse
ToudaiLighthouse
UraInlet or Cove
WanBay
YamaMountain
ZakiPoint or Cape
ZanMountain

Many terms translate very easily - for example, "Yokohama-ko" is Yokohama Harbor, "Tateyama-wan" is Tateyama Bay, and so on. You can even break those names up even further - Tateyama-wan comes out as "Steep Mountain Bay" (or something!).

Edit: And then I wandered into Russian territory, so I now I need a new list!

Translations grabbed from:
http://www.nauticalchartsonline.com/chart/zoom?chart=96500 (see Glossary, middle left)
http://www.doukhobor.org/Terms-Geographic.htm

RussianEnglish
BankaBank
BukhtaBay
GoraMountain
GorkaMountain
GubaBay
KamenRock
KanalChannel
KosaSpit
LimanEstuary or Bay
Mel'Shoal
MoreSea
MysPoint or Cape
OkeanOcean
OstrovIsland
OstrovaIslands
PoluostrovPeninsula
ProlivStrait
RifReef
SkalaRock
SopkaMountain or Volcano
VulcanVolcano
ZalivBay or Gulf

Again, translations are quite easy - Mys Dezhneva is Cape Dezhnev, Beringov proliv is the Bering Strait, and so on.

Hi Danny,

For Russia we have a separate reference thread and a discussion thread... will check if the terms you've added to this one are already in the Russian placenames thread.

Aha! Looks like most of the important ones are over there - sadly, my Cyrillic isn't good enough to give the proper versions for the new ones...

I've added them, hoping not to have mismatched too much... i know a little the alphabet, but i'm not sure about the pronounce of new terms (some are on Google translate, but not every one), and Slavic languages have several consonants with sounds appearing pretty similar to a western-language speaker (i.e. if 'Sopka' is pronounced 'Shopka' i've most probably mismatched the starting letter).

Our Slavic speaking users will hopefully warn us if I got something wrong :)

The Geographical terms look good to me. (I had 2 1/2 years of Russian in university, many years ago.) I had a job transliterating Russian Cyrillic to the western alphabet for about a year or so at the time.) If you're puzzled by any particular name, just message me and I'll take a crack at it.

Looking again,

Mel' (Мель) - Shoal    I wouldn't transliterate the ь at the end of a word, so it would be Mel   (same for Камень - Kamen)

and, perhaps,

Reyd (Рейд) the й is usually a letter j, so Rejd.

Mind you, the transliterating rules change every so often and there were a few other Cyrillic characters pre-revolution that have since disappeared. Plus the habit of some log keepers to write whatever they felt like at the time, just to confuse us even more.

Mind you, checking Wiki (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GOST_16876-71) I see that the rules I was using (for libraries, and not on this Wiki page) were different than the current rules. (Щ  for me in the library ordering system fifty years ago was shch).

However, for me, the Russian is much easier than the Arabic names mentioned on the HMS Grafton when she was sailing in the Arabian Sea.

It would be so much easier if everyone in the world just used English!!!!   ;)

The cost of having a mother tongue that is a johnny-come-lately creole language based on 3 root tongues, that adores taking words from every language it comes in contact with - horrible spelling, and everyone has an older language than we do.  And we have many more words to pun with, for the fun of it.  :D

Just come to this one while searching those terrible yang-tse positions (the fact the river has changed its course a lot does not help at all >:( ):
https://archive.org/stream/cu31924071164986#page/n473/mode/2up
Dove's Nest, Actaeon shoal, Vine point, Centaur shoal and a lot of other buoys, lights and places are mentioned.

Also this French map has some useful names:
http://216.117.166.233/zoom_map.htm?zoomifyImagePath=http://216.117.166.233/os/zoom/29885/

The London Gazette newspaper show changes to buoys and other placemarks with position. I should broaden search... actually i found these two while looking for a specific place:
https://www.thegazette.co.uk/London/issue/27954/page/6644/data.pdf (1906 - SE Spit buoy and Actaeon shoal buoy)
https://www.thegazette.co.uk/London/issue/27573/page/4282/data.pdf (1903 - several buoys)
Searching google with site:thegazette.co.uk "yang tse kiang" brings a lot of results.

This pdf comprises some chinese/english names: http://oldchinabooks.com/yangshen/Yang_Shen_Glossary.pdf

Also these two David Rumsey's maps, even if recent, contains a couple of useful names:

Perry Castaneda Library is pretty full of maps covering almost all the world.
For Philippines you may be interested to the whole list here, more than those two i've mentioned for the search of Dagupan Light:

Mapmaker for HMS Cicala reporting in. She spent her last 6 months transcribed on the China station, and these are the ports I had to figure out because they were not yet on the list.

Wu-Chow or Wuchau [Wuzhou]     Lat 23.48, Long 111.31     on the Xunjiang River
Sam Shui [Sanshui]     Lat 23.17, Long 112.83     on the Xi River where it connects to the Beijiang River
Ki Su [Jiuzhou Port]     Lat 22.23, Long 113.59     the port near Macau they went to after leaving Kowloon Dry Docks
(I found it in China Pilot, described as shallow but good for small boats sheltering from typhoons)
Kowloon Dry Dock     Lat 22.32, Long 114.20
slightly offset from Kowloon harbor proper, don't know if you need it but Robert found it precisely.
Hong Kong     Lat 22.29, Long 114.17     slightly more precise than current list for Victoria harbor.
          from Howard's list of ports
Canton [Guangzhou]     Lat 23.06, Long 113.27     also slightly more precise than current list
also from Howard's list of ports

Tak Hing on the Xunjiang River and Wom Moon on the Xi River remain mysteries, but they were stopping places on the way to Wu-Chow and Sam Shui.

Latitude in decimal degrees: 30.849722 Longitude in decimal degrees: 122.679444

Huaniaoshan (Huaniao Shan, North Saddle Island) Lighthouse opened in 1870. At north end of island. This Lat, Long is for the island and it is not quite correct for the lighthouse as the point given is about a mile southeast of the northern tip of the island.

I just took a tourist trip looking for your lighthouse.
Quote
From China's tourism office
http://www.chinatoday.com.cn/ctenglish/se/txt/2010-09/03/content_296123_3.htm
Huaniaoshan Island was a strategic location in times past, an important gateway by which domestic ships and international vessels entered Shanghai. In the middle of the 19th century the U.K. opened sea routes via the Pacific to Shanghai through this area. To ensure navigational safety, the U.K. financed the construction of a lighthouse on the island in 1870.
It is a 16.5-meter-high, four-storied cylindrical building, known as ?No.1 Lighthouse in the Far East.? It has survived several wars and remains well preserved to this day. In the evenings, the xenon spotlight on top sweeps around at a speed of 1 rotation per minute, sending off light that can be seen from 30 nautical miles.
The island has never been fully developed for tourism purposes though it enjoys a superior location near Shanghai. Due to a lack of facilities such as restaurants and accommodations, there are few tourists. However, the relative obscurity has guaranteed its unspoiled natural beauty.

If I read the lat/long from Google Maps directly on top of the describe cylindrical building in the center of the island, it is lat/long is 30.85272, 122.67773

From mapurves:

PhilippinesJuag Island (http://mapcarta.com/15765860)12.56124.12SorsogonConcord calls it Juak Island.
PhilippinesSorsogon City (http://www.fallingrain.com/world/RP/58/Sorsogon.html)12.97124.01Bicol

I'm sorry, but I just noticed that I lost the link to the URL's in my spreadsheet. I don't know how long that's been going on, but it's fixed now.

Just to confuse matters, there seem to be three Sorsogon Cities with four locations:
From the Alphabetical Listing of places in the Philippines (http://www.fallingrain.com/world/RP/a/S/o/r)

Concord's current Sorsogon is the first one listed above. However, Mapcarta gives the following:

Location:  Sorsogon, Bicol, Luzon, Philippines, Southeast Asia, Asia
    Latitide:  12? 50' (12.8333?) north
    Longitude:  123? 55' (123.9167?) east
Average elevation:  49 meters (161 feet)

The Wikipedia entry for Sorgoson City has the same Lat/Long as number 1 above.

The location in Mapcarta closest to the location for Sorgoson City #1 is:

Sampaloc River
    Type:  Stream
Location:  Sorsogon, Bicol, Luzon, Philippines, Southeast Asia, Asia
    Latitide:  12? 58' 10.2" (12.9695?) north
    Longitude:  124? 0' 29.2" (124.0081?) east
Average elevation:  3 meters (10 feet)

This is curious because Concord uses the following three locations for bearings at anchorage, none of which I can find: Makugie Pt, Alumpapayo Pt and Paro Island. It shall, for me, ever remain a mystery.

Entered all three options (Bicol, Samar, Cebu) for Sorsogon in main list, noted Concord bearings for #1. Thanks mapurves!

'Jakoits' is shown as Jekoits on this map:

"Diana" is patrolling from Singapore and I spent quite a while tracking down a reference to Cape St James.
Cape St James is at Lat 10? 16? 41?, Long 107? 4? 15?
https://books.google.co.uk/books?id=puU2AQAAMAAJ&pg=PA302&lpg=PA302&dq=cape+st+james+siam&source=bl&ots=z8yrDkycxZ&sig=agIvPYy6gc67VsyzRx0iicYCEZ4&hl=en&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwjSgYGsjuPLAhXJOhoKHXA1BDMQ6AEILjAF#v=onepage&q=cape%20st%20james%20siam&f=false

The settlement is indexed as Vung Tau and is in Vietnam. In French sources it is referred to as Cap Saint Jacques or Ville du Cap and is at Lat 10.35, Long 107.07
http://mapcarta.com/Vung_Tau

She then went on to meet a collier at Pulo Condore which is off the coast of Vietnam at Lat 8.43, Long 104.83
http://www.geographic.org/geographic_names/name.php?uni=-4954155&fid=6669&c=vietnam

Just in case someone else is struggling with these places.

All places added to map, ref & csv. Thanks studentforever!

Note: For Cape Saint James, i've added both the town (now Vung Tau) and the real cape which is a little south (now Mui Nghinh Phong).
For Pulo/Poulo/Pulau Condore i've added both the island group (now Con Son/Pulau Kondor Islands/Iles de Poulo Condore/Pulo Condore Group) and the town with the same name (now Con Son/Pulo Condore/Poulo Condore) on the main island.

80F in November could be why Honolulu is popular.

I will have to sort out the place names from Japan and the Kuril Islands (presumably in the Russia section) recently visited by Albatross.  Many were difficult or impossible for me to identify.

Well that makes November sounds rather nice :D 70F would be very welcome :)

Hmmm - if you could post the page addresses and perhaps indicate where the words are for those mysterious places it might be that one of the folks working on the editing could have covered that area and might have a better eye for where they are - fear not - few places defeat us in the end  ;)

I have become quite addicted to finding places visited by Concord and Yorktown in Asia. The reward of finding some obscure place is most gratifying.  :o

I found this link for Nautical Maps of Japan:

a couple of days ago. Some of the older maps have the English names for places referenced by our ships. Sometimes the old former names can be very hard to find. Matteo and Joan, however, are super sleuths and dig up all sorts of wonderful information.

Hi Hurlock, thank you!

I'm slowly digging around those, so i'm updating this answer as soon as i find places. Once i've collected them all i'm updating reference and maps.

Novosilgoo should be Novosilzoo (with a z instead of a g) or something similar... found a cyrillic reference for it on loadmap.net (Russian Army maps). It's Kamui/Kamoi Misaki (43.33329N, 140.34695E - 43 20 00N, 140 20 49E). Both mentioned sightings matches well with calculated ship position.
The cyrillic name is not so well readable, i've worked it out as Новоснльцеда, for sure it starts with "Novos.." (apparently the only Novo<something> in the area), it could be more something like Novoseltzeva. (Edit: Found also as Cape Novosilzoff here (http://ids.lib.harvard.edu/ids/view/11899369?buttons=y))

Beckhir Misaki is indeed Benkei-Misaki, it matches perfectly with bearing. Had not found Beckhir or Beckhis references though. (Edit: Found also as Cape Raiten here (http://ids.lib.harvard.edu/ids/view/11899369?buttons=y))

Cape Sutsuki and Point Sutsuki are Motsuta-misaki (42.60696N, 139.82334E - 42 36 25N, 139 49 24E), the point/cape matches with both the first bearing and the second observation at 2:36pm, when it's abeam the ship. The little town of Suki is south of this point, whence maybe the name.

Point Kina Shi should be Obana-misaki (42.303N, 139.76752E - 42 18 11N, 139 46 03E), at the foot of Mount Kenashi.

Gomiga Zaki Light House should be the Inaho-misaki Lighthouse. The mentioned point could be the nearby Gome-saki or Gakeno-saki a little to the south, but the only lighthouse there is the one at Cape Inaho. It matches with bearing.

---

Have still no hints about 6 Sima Islands and Olusiti Light, Olusiti Island... that's odd, first placename should refer to some islets on the north coast of Okushiri, since the vessel had yet to arrive near the island when those were sighted.... no mention found unless they're the small rocky islets around Inaho-misaki.
Olusiti is even more puzzling... the only lighthouse on Okushiri island was the one at Inaho-misaki, already addressed as Gomiga-Zaki Light. The ship lost sight of Okusiri Light at 8:20pm after reporting Olusiti Lt abeam and South end Olusiti Island abeam in the 6 to 8pm watch.

If the text would have been more garbled i'd have bet Olusiti and 6(or O?) Shima Islands are all just Okushiri Island... but writing is enough clear, and available maps online are quite few. The far O-Shima Island should not be Olusiti... at midnight the ship was still more or less at the latitude of Esashi, she would reach O-shima latitude just around 1am and see Ko Island from far, the following day at 2am.

I fear i'll not be able to locate last two places :-\

Fort Pt.  also referred to in a later log.  Maybe refers to the Fort inside Hakodate although this is not on a point of land

Hakodate Head possibly Hakodate Hanto (peninsular) or the point at the end of it Obana-misaki

Fort Pt. Quite a different bearing from an anchorage in the same harbour.  Quite a near point?

Cape Blunt Light = Shiokubi-misaki N 41.71358, E 140.95515

Shiriya Saki Light = Alternate spelling of Shiriya-zaki (already in your list)

Hi Hurlock!

All places added to map, ref & csv.

Regarding Fort Point and Hakodate Head i've found this one on ebay, from an auction selling an old admiralty map:
http://i.ebayimg.com/images/g/z6cAAOSw0OJXL1MS/s-l1600.jpg

Details are not good, and that image could disappear any moment, but the fort is visible at the actual Benten-saki (historical Anama Point), matching both bearings with the ship... a little outside the actual harbor the first time, and inside the second time.
Also Hakodate Head is reported, as you guessed it's reported as both the peninsula and the Obana-misaki point.

(original auction is here: http://www.ebay.com/itm/1883-Antique-Nautical-Sea-Sailing-Chart-Map-Japan-Yezo-Hakodate-Harbor-1889-/361552796801 - details of other parts of the map are very poor).

Hi Matteo,
I've landed up in French Polynesia whilst whaling (well - my ship has, I'm sat in landlocked Oxfordshire). I had a look but couldn't see any French Polynesian places - I'm not going mad am I?

If I'm sane then I'll try to work out the places mentioned with Spanish names then run by France or possibly the USA and now with indigenous names - hurrah!!

Cheers, Joan

Hi Joan,

If you're stuck for sources to help you search for names, try Matteo's Map tool (http://owtools.scienceontheweb.net/owtools/maps.php). Enter an approximate Lat/Long and it will list all the maps that cover your point. You can then select the map or maps of your choice and look at them. They can be a big help, although they mostly cover the western half of the Pacific Ocean, but there should be some in your area.  :)

By the end of March, the ship was in their reported latitude, 9 degrees 30' S. Cook altered course and began to run down his longitude to the west. The first island -- or rather the large rock Fatu Haku -- was sighted on April 6 by the sixteen year old midshipman Alexander Hood, and called Hood's Island by the captain; then another, as the weather turned squally for the first time on the run. Next morning there were a third and a fourth, and Cook knew he had found what he was in search of.)

Hi Joan,

I'm adding those places soon, also i've remapped those islands on geonames... placenames position was quite bad there.

I suppose you already saw the three maps best matching the area, from our find map tool:
Hiva Oa (http://library.ucsd.edu/dc/object/bb9386934p)
Anchorages in the Marquesas Islands (http://library.ucsd.edu/dc/object/bb84995530)
Marquesas Islands (http://library.ucsd.edu/dc/object/bb49841626)

Edit: No hints on those two unknown bays... Hanacaoa is similar to Hanapaoa and south of Hanaiapa, but the 'c' is clearly written in the log and it's a little too uncertain to use it as an alias for Hanapaoa.
Hanarora is even more puzzling... I'm not totally sure but i think there's no 'r' sound in Marquesan language, so it's unlikely there's an 'r' in Hana<something> (Hana is most likely a native word for bay)... the word has been corrected on the log, but i can't read what was behind.

Wow - thanks so much for those 3 links - I had not found those - and they are exactly what I was looking for  :D

Thanks also for remapping the islands on geonames. When I was looking them up I found some variety in positions given.

Your idea about the 'Hana' section of the name made me check that and bingo! - I found this:
http://www.behindthename.com/submit/names/usage/polynesian
HANALEI   f & m   Hawaiian
Means "crescent bay" from Hawaiian hana "bay" and lei.
(Doh! - just spotted the translation of place names block on the left of the chart!)

Cheers for your help propriome :D

The poorly scribed place was clearly written as Hanarora on 8th March:

Still cannot trace Hanaroroa though

A couple more for The Marquesas:
Albion2 P47: https://panoptes-uploads.zooniverse.org/production/subject_location/762acfd0-139a-4114-a1d5-7b9c4e46f08e.jpeg

6th March 1856
From Geographic.org:
Full Name (see definition): Magdalena Island
Primary Country Code (see definition): FP (French Polynesia)
First-order administrative division code (see definition): 00 (French Polynesia (general) )
Region Font Code (see definition): 1 (Americas/Western Europe)
Unique Feature Identifier (see definition): -1310159
Unique Name Identifier (see definition): -1896130
Latitude in decimal degrees (see definition): -10.466667
Longitude in decimal degrees (see definition): -138.633333

Second place mentioned is Waitahou - I think that this is the Albion 2 version of Vaihatu, but impossible to confirm.

Same page: 10th March 1856 (South side of Domenica)
'bay of Hanavuate' - also unfound on maps :(

Waitahoo/Waitahou should indeed be S.Christina Island or Vaihatu (see https://books.google.it/books?id=Xvod6ICJxiUC&pg=PA314&lpg=PA314&dq=waitahoo&q=waitahoo&f=false#v=onepage)

In the meantime i've found a mention of Hanarora (and also Hanaca-oa) here: http://www.gutenberg.org/files/46390/46390-h/46390-h.htm

I'm still reading through it to see if i can determine those settlement position.
Hanacaoa is mentioned as being up (or windward) and therefore to the east, 3 miles (not specified whether nautical or not - and i'm not sure if the book is fictional work or not) while Hanarora being to down "a few miles" to the leeward and therefore to the west.

In the book the crew fleeing on foot from Hanacaoa passed a hill to return to Hanaiapa bay... i'm inclined to think that Hanacaoa is the actual bay of Hanatekua.

Hanarora could be the unnamed bay west of Hanaiapa entrance, west of where a cascade is present (mentioned around the internet as a tourist's place to visit), otherwise it could be the Hanaohouua bay (i've checked that 'r' is a sound present in Maori language, while Marquesan language has not that sound, which is substituted by some kind of guttural stop. Taking 'r's out of Hanarora makes the name Hana'o'a, which is not that far from Hanaohouua sound).

Well done propriome - fantastic find! Let's hope the whereabouts is revealed.

Another stop for Albion
P47 Alb2: https://panoptes-uploads.zooniverse.org/production/subject_location/762acfd0-139a-4114-a1d5-7b9c4e46f08e.jpeg
Looks like 'Hanavuate' on 10th March, but is written more clearly as Hanamate on the 11th March:
Geonames:
Hanamate
Hana Mate,Hanamate
4020052
H BAY bay
French Polynesia PF
-9.80849, -139.00454

And:

Saw the island of Uahuga:
Full Name (see definition): Uahuga
Primary Country Code (see definition): FP (French Polynesia)
First-order administrative division code (see definition): 00 (French Polynesia (general) )
Latitude in decimal degrees (see definition): -8.9

They report their position in the Meridian to 4pm entry as bearings to Princess Island (ESE 1/2 E) and Cockatoo Island (NE by E). From their last reported coordinates they should be near the Sunda Strait. Princess Island would be Panaitan (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Panaitan), and the island to the NE by E would probably be Krakatoa, although I could only find one possible reference (https://books.google.com/books?id=p3w6AQAAMAAJ&pg=PA95&lpg=PA95&dq=cockatoo+island+java+-sydney&source=bl&ots=4YaLvdEl97&sig=dcWXBR9nsZ9yzTI_6eaawdYH29c&hl=en&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwjAvI317sXOAhWEKB4KHQReA44Q6AEIJzAD#v=onepage&q=cockatoo%20island%20java%20-sydney&f=false) to that.

Agree with both. Panaitan is historically known as Princes Island (with just an 's'), and the Cockatoo can be only Krakatoa from that position. Both places and aliases added to map, ref & csv. Thanks Randi and Bob!

USS Jamestown
May 22, 1863

In the 8 to Midnight entry they report a Pluto Island bearing WNW by compass. Based on their reported positions on the 22nd and 23rd this would probably be Cu Lao Thu, a small island off S.E. Vietnam.

http://oldweather.s3.amazonaws.com/ow3/final/USS%20Jamestown/vol015of067/vol015of067_169_1.jpg

Hon Phu Quy and its aliases Poulo Cecil de Mer and Pluto Island (had not yet added the Cu Lao Thu alias, will do asap) added to map, ref & csv. Thanks Bob.

Wasn't too sure on this, i've found nothing on the internet and according to ship position, the one observed could also be the Great Catwick Island (or Round Island), as apparently the ship cruised inside the Catwick group, keeping Great Catwick on the WNW and Little Catwick on the ESE... but i think the Poulo Cecil de Mer option is the best one.

One of the numerous HMS Pluto was active in that area, maybe the island was named after her. Had not found anything though except her exploration of a river in Malaysia in this 1878 book (https://archive.org/stream/directoryfornavi00find#page/n7/mode/2up)

Came across a reference to Brothers Light in Diana's log, she was heading for Singapore. Reference 5.10am

http://oldweather.s3.amazonaws.com/ADM53-39832/ADM%2053-39832-015_0.jpg

It seems it is now indexed as Pulau Iyu Kecil in Indonesia.
