Title: Canadian Place Names -- Discussion
Post by: propriome on March 13, 2013, 07:58:14 pm
In general, if you are looking for place names or for maps and other useful references, you should go to Canadian Place Names -- Reference (http://forum.oldweather.org/index.php?topic=3638.0).

You can use this topic to search for information that has not yet been added to the Reference topic.

You can also use this topic to ask for help with reading a Canadian place name or locating the place.
Give us a link to the log page(s) where it is mentioned (http://forum.oldweather.org/index.php?topic=1073.0) and tell us approximately where it occurs on the page(s).

Note: Place names include lighthouses.

If you have information about a place name or find a useful reference, please help everyone by contributing it to this topic.

When contributing place names, try to provide as many of the following as possible:
Don't worry if you can't supply all the information. Your link to the page will enable others to search for the missing information.
(You can save us even more work by using the template provided (http://forum.oldweather.org/index.php?topic=3637.msg63493#msg63493), but that is strictly optional.)

And into Canadian waters I float...

Firstly, the NOAA site has two more charts in the "Inland Coast" series you've got linked. The entire set (as far as I can find) is:

THE INLAND PASSAGE
Cape Mudge to Cape Commerell
http://historicalcharts.noaa.gov/tiled/zoomifypreview.html?zoomifyImagePath=cp1565c

Cape Commerell to Point Walker
http://historicalcharts.noaa.gov/tiled/zoomifypreview.html?zoomifyImagePath=540-A-00-1880

Point Walker to Swanson Bay
http://historicalcharts.noaa.gov/tiled/zoomifypreview.html?zoomifyImagePath=540-F-00-1880

Swanson Bay to Chatham Sound
http://historicalcharts.noaa.gov/tiled/zoomifypreview.html?zoomifyImagePath=540-H-00-1880

These are all very useful as it seems a large number of names have changed since they were printed.

White Cliff - this is a location within Boundary Bay, seemingly on the western shore (my ship reports it being 4 miles away on bearing N75W). May possibly be linked to White Rock, BC. All except White Cliff added to map & ref. Maps added to link section in the header post. Thanks Danny.

Regarding White Cliff, no hints so far. Will continue searching the net for infos...

Well, given that the site is dedicated to hosting modern nautical charts from throughout the world, perhaps linking to individual maps on there is a bit of a lost cause - there's a lot to link to!

From time to time, when geonames.org goes under maintenance, all links goes to the center of London, with nothing else shown. Maybe this was the issue... actually the link seems to work for me as well, even if, as Randi pointed, the rock is not visible on google earth.

For some reason, the Thetis has discontinued Long/Lat readings even when at sea, so I am trying to include as many notes of location from the events page as possible.  This is made more difficult by the new log-keeper whose handwriting never seems to match my brain synapses.

So, could someone help me figure out this reading?  I think it is the same word in both places.

Lucky for you I lived in the Yukon for many years. It's Tongass.

US                  , Tongass Narrows                    ,   55.32, -131.62, Alaska

There's also a Tongass Island, a Port Tongass Village, a Tongass National Forest, a Tongass Reef.....

I didn't find Fort Tongass, but it might be Port Tongass Village (http://mapcarta.com/29604488) 54.75N 130.70W

thank you very much!  Don't know what the "Fort" or "Port" might be - not the P of this writer (see "Port Simpson" on the top line) but does not really strike me as a Fort either.

added after more research:
It is Fort Tongass - just over the border into Alaska!
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fort_Tongass

I will add that to the Alaskan place names thread.

Thanks kookaburra! Fort Tongass has been added to Alaskan place names

Sorry, I wanted to look further, but I was called away, and didn't have time to look in Wiki. (I usually start with Mapcarta because they have locations nearby, other names etc.  I can zoom and move around the map and often recognise the word I'm looking for, except that I've been deceived by hard to read handwriting.)  I also note that:
Tongass Passage Coordinates: 54?44′39″N 130?38′10″W is not to be confused with Tongass Narrows.

In decimal notation that's: 54.7442n 130.6361w

Very strange - must be the difference between US and European Google Books.  I tested the link just now, and I got "eBook Free".  Sigh, sorry it doesn't stay consistent globally.

Hi Joan,

I've added places to db, will update threads soon...

Regarding Cape Sherard/Cape Osborn i've a little doubt.

There's a Cape Osborn on the west coast of Devon Island, according to geonames and also toporama (which are both "modern" sources).

There's a Cape Sherard on the east coast of Devon Island (coordinates 74.5995, -80.22217), and on a David Rumsey 1967 map (http://www.davidrumsey.com/luna/servlet/detail/RUMSEY~8~1~208387~3002003) it's also named (could it be a mistake? It's the only reference i've found so far) Cape Osborn.

I'm unsure about correct naming, and will deepen searches (in the meantime i've already added western Cape Osborn and eastern Cape Sherard). It seems the link for the Northwind is not accessible to me, so i can't read the log directly...

I absolutely sympathize with that one Matteo...I looked around a lot of places, but it's certainly a shady place to pin down.  Strange that you can't get to the page - I'll sort out a copy to put here - back in a moment :)

Oh great - nor can I get to it..ggrrrrrrr!  >:(  OK - off to try a little harder  >:(

Got it  :D : https://zooniverse-static.s3.amazonaws.com/old-weather-2015/Cold_Science/Coast_Guard/Northwind_WAG-282_or_WAGB-282_/Northwind-WAG-282-1946-split/Northwind-WAG-282-1946-0262-1.JPG

Great!

Indeed the one mentioned as Cape Osborn is the actual Cape Sherard on the east coast (their constant direction of 72 pgc in the weather pages leaves no doubt - they're definitely moving eastward), as in the Rumsey 1967 map.

Just added an alias in the db... will update thread soon.

Edit: Just updated ref, map & csv!

Haro Strait - between Vancouver Island and San Juan Island

Thanks Randi! Haro Strait is already in the Canadian and in the US references

Oops! :-[ https://catalog.archives.gov/OpaAPI/media/23697935/content/dc-metro/rg-026/585454/0002/Bear-b361-1921/Bear-b361-1921_0286.JPG says Hara Strait. That is probably a typo. https://catalog.archives.gov/OpaAPI/media/23697935/content/dc-metro/rg-026/585454/0002/Bear-b361-1921/Bear-b361-1921_0281.JPG has Haro Strait. I started searching for Hara and didn't find it. When I found Haro in the right area I was so tired that I didn't realize that the last letter was different.

No problem at all :D :D Better a report for something already enlisted than a missing place!

From Beluga 1900 (Sept 12)

Horton River
69? 56′ 1″ N, 126? 48′ 10″ W

Smoking Cliffs
Closest I could find was smoking hills:
69? 31′ 1″ N, 126? 33′ 9″ W

All added to map, ref & csv. Thanks Joke Slayer and welcome aboard the Geographical Help Board!!
For the Smoking Cliffs agree they're the Smoking Hills (most probably the ship is referring just to the coastline of that wide area)
