Dockside Cafe / Word game: Last letters link - 2017
« on: January 01, 2017, 10:12:16 am »
Formerly: Word game I play in my free time...

Previous years:
-- 2012
-- 2013
-- 2014
-- 2015
-- 2016

I don't know if people have time for a game like this, but still..... This game is a game I have always played and loved. I post a word. The next person has to post a word that starts with the two ending letters of my word. The next person has to post a word that starts with the last two letters of the previous word. And so on... Try not to post a word that makes the game impossible for the next person. If that happens, though, the next person gets to choose any word.

Example: Person A- apple
Person B - leniency
Person C- cyanide

I don't know how people would react to this game or if they'll like it,so this is how I'll test it out.
P.S. The game is called Fazan, which, translated into English would be Pheasant(don't ask me why).

(a with two dots over shows in preview but not in send? )

That's the odd thing about unsupported characters: They show up in preview, but when you hit send, they get replaced with question marks or just vanish.

Technical Support / Avatar setter hates HTTPS?
« on: August 07, 2015, 10:59:24 pm »
I just encountered the weirdest error while trying to change my forum avatar.
My strategy in the past was to save the picture I wanted on my PC and upload it to my general Zooniverse account, because the system there is much less fussy.
Then, I would copy the URL of my Zooniverse avatar and paste it in the "Specify avatar by URL" bar on this forum.

But when I tried that, the second part didn't work - my page kept getting set to "No avatar"!
Eventually, I noticed something: Every time I then chose "Specify avatar by URL", the bar would be prefilled with "http://" - as if saying "The URL has to be an HTTP one".
So when I pasted in the URL of my Zooniverse avatar, I took a closer look - and sure enough, it started with "https://".
So I deleted the s, hit "Save" - and it worked! Took some time to load, but now I finally got the new avatar I wanted!

Just wanted to post this here in case anybody else experiences the same problem.
No idea why this would happen - IT protocols aren't my thing.

Notes, issues and stuff:
- The list uses the Zooniverse names, not the OW forum names.
- If you notice a name appearing twice on the list, please inform me at once. See here for an explanation of how this can occur.
- Only the top 12 transcribers for each ship are included. So if you have done work on a certain ship but are not amongst the top 12, that work will not be counted.
- Old "So-and-so has passed the X00.000 mark!" milestones can be found here: http://forum.oldweather.org/index.php?topic=3898.0
- This table only counts the number of WR, not the number of events, edited ship histories, or anything else. Those are also worth the time and effort, but cannot be counted by the data scraper and are therefore not included here.

Dockside Cafe / Chat - 2015
« on: January 01, 2015, 05:06:26 am »
Now that it really is 2015 in New Jersey, I can say...

Happy New Year!

Here's to more victories on OW! I hope to complete my parts on the Patterson, Concord and Jamestown 1866.
This past year, I managed the Pioneer, Bear and Unalga - and the Perry too.

What Does THAT Mean? / Confused sea
« on: November 17, 2014, 11:44:58 am »
What does "confused sea" mean?

See 8 am - Noon on this page: http://oldweather.s3.amazonaws.com/ow3/final/USCS%20Patterson/Book%207/IMG_5575_1.jpg (Patterson, 27 April 1912)

Very interesting article on how new technology, big data and amateur's observations (Sadly, OW is not mentioned) are helping improve weather predictions:

Dockside Cafe / How to prevent frustration with the back button
« on: August 04, 2014, 06:59:33 pm »
Hello,

I'm sure all of you know how frustrating it is when you accidentally hit the back button while in the middle of transcribing a page and lose all your progress.
Well, I got good news: There's an easy way to prevent this.
All you have to do is add a # to the end of the URL, for example:

Change http://www.oldweather.org/transcribe/500dc362cd0db40002000456
to          http://www.oldweather.org/transcribe/500dc362cd0db40002000456#

If you hit the back button, the # will disappear, but you will not lose your progress. Just add a new # and keep going (it doesn't even require a page reload!).
I've tested this, and it works fine for me - I'm doing it all the time now.

Handwriting Help / Seaman A.B. smashed fingers
« on: July 31, 2014, 12:45:12 pm »
On the top of this page, there's note on a Seaman A.B. smashing his fingers:

http://oldweather.s3.amazonaws.com/ow3/final/USCS%20Pioneer/Book%2024%20-%20January-March,%201928/IMG_0139_0.jpg

Can anybody read the name? My best guess would be Ar., Fred - there's a Seaman A.B. on board called Fred Arnold, and he was on board at the time.

Here's the crew list of the Pioneer, in case that helps: http://forum.oldweather.org/index.php?topic=4041.0

Technical Support / Website Down?

I can't access the OW website- when I try, I get the error message below.
I can still access the forum.

What Does THAT Mean? / Discharged and/or paid off
« on: April 09, 2014, 01:14:56 pm »
I have a question concerning the Pioneer: When a crew member leaves, the log almost always says "Discharged".
But on this page, it just says "Paid off", and doesn't explicitly say whether they were discharged or not.
Can anybody please confirm whether this means they actually left the ship?

Note: the next page shows several new crew boarding, so maybe the others did leave.

Dockside Cafe / Praise for the OW forum
« on: January 15, 2014, 08:19:16 pm »
I must say the ODW discussion forum isn't a patch on ours!  Not at all user friendly.  It surprises me, that with all the praise the OW forum has garnered, you might think it would be the model for the forum on a later history project.  Oh well, mine is not to reason why!

That's my biggest reason for staying here. I find it very difficult to meet new people and establish social relationships with them, whether online or offline, because I have Asperger Syndrome. So I really enjoy those few connections that I do have, including you guys.
I don't know any of you offline, and I probably never will due to my social anxieties, but I like this forum a lot, and I know my life just wouldn't be the same without it. Thank You.

Handwriting Help / Very badly written name
« on: January 14, 2014, 07:09:44 pm »
http://oldweather.s3.amazonaws.com/ow3/final/USCS%20Pioneer/Book%207%20-%20October-December,1923/IMG_8372_0.jpg

There's something about somebody leaving the ship, but I can only make out part of the last name.
The first name and rank are impossible to decipher, and I can't find a match on the crew list either.
Can anybody crack it?

Interesting story with the stinky bits left in.

Please do not post on this page. General remarks can be made in the Discussion pages(please).

I am NOT actively transcribing this ship right now, as I have gone as far as I could on the logs currently uploaded.
Send me a PM if you find any changes EXCEPT for the officer lists at the start of each log book.

If you can help with the ~ or ? entries, or you find mistakes, please Message me. Thanks.
