The Boarding Officer seems to be ANS Hoskyn   perhaps someone sharp-eyed can read the pencilled name under the Accompanying Officer

That last entry sobers you up doesn't it?

Lieutenant! I think that qualifies as rank insubordination at best.
The real Navy probably has some amazing definition of your offense - mutiny maybe.
Gah! hadn't thought about that...erm...darn...guilty...yikes...(finishes last entry..and to save the honour of the ship...takes small jolly boat and rows into a distant sunset)

Dockside Cafe / Trying to get to rank of 'Captain'

Erm - I shouldn't perhaps be so worldly about OW - I should be thinking of the greater good - but I am human. I had to get 900+ weather readings in to be a Captain when I started last week, the next day it had somehow shot down to 800+, then it wombled around the mid it's 1011.  :o  Have I been naughty - is this OW's version of the brigg?  :D  How does the ranking system work pls?

After some disasterous floods in N Oxon a few years back (the rail station at Banbury nearly got flooded away  :o ) the canal's been reasonably well regulated since then :)  So much so that they flooded half of Kidlington downstream, and consequently the Botanic Gardens in Oxford, to keep the canal happy a couple of years later  ::)  You'll have fun - and the pubs are good - and it's very lovely countryside.  :)

Handwriting Help / Re: Who?

Yikes! Looks like a first name plus on initial (?A) then surname. First name could be Jonathan, but it's not the usual script version of 'J';  and I think that the fourth tall letter is the same as the start of the first name because at the bottom the letter  the pen strikes left before looping back.  So: not Bloggs then.  ;)
Is there  a list of commanders somewhere?

Oh dear - my lot on the Jed lead a very genteel life compared.....though coal tallying party sounds a tad like that famous children's game, 'now because you've all been so good, we're all going to have fun and polish our shoes'. I wonder if they won the football??

Dockside Cafe / Likes his meals on time!

Very new to this...are all logs made up to show breakfast, breakfast tidied up, lunch, hands ready to get on with things after lunch, tea, dinner? Or is my captain just a man who likes and appreciates his meals often and regular?   ;D ;D ;D

thank you!

I have just started on my voyage of discovery with OldWeather - having stumbled into the horror of learning the geography of Hong Kong (there's lots of it) I thought I'd take a short haul through the forum - and found this...I have chortled with laughter at these OWLs (OldWeatherLosties (?!)). I think this is going to be a lot of fun...especially for such a landlubber. :D
