I'm pretty sure I couldn't choke down twelve glasses of sherry.

Having worked in the Brewing industry for 20 years I have ceased to be amazed by what some people can drink before breakfast.

But maybe that wasn't "before breakfast" for Lt Genge?  Perhaps he'd been on duty overnight?

Twelve glasses of sherry sounds like a bet to me.  Either that, or he was "drinking to forget".

Sorry, it's just in my nature to play devil's advocate - I'm afraid I can't help it!  :)

Maybe he needed that much alcohol to be able to sleep at 9am?

Whatever the reason, respect is due to a man who can drink that much and not fall overboard  ;D

I can't be sure that it was he, but a sailor went into a pub and looked around and seemed to be counting all the women present. He asked the landlord for 23 glasses of port and lemon. Then he took the tray of drinks and presented a glass to each woman and said ...
"Drink up. I'd like it to said that I have a port in every girl."

I've not heard that one for years. I can't imagine why not.

It is indeed hard to think how such good jokes fall into disuse. An exceedingly camp young man waltzed into a pub full of sailors with a canary balanced on his wrist and announced, "Any of you lovely boys who can guess the weight of this canary can have me tonight!"
A burly stoker said, "A hundredweight".
"Ooh", said our hero, "That's near enough".
