You can send Personal Messages (PMs) to anyone on the forum through My Messages at the top of forum pages.
These messages go to the recipient/s only and will not appear on the forum itself.
If there is a number next to My Messages, it means that you have received that number of messages.
Place your cursor on My Messages and click 'Read your messages' or 'Send a message'.

If you have chosen to read your messages, when the Personal Messages Inbox page opens, you will see that there are 'buttons' with drop-down menus for Messages, Actions and Preferences (see below).

These menus can be set permanently in a side panel by clicking the << arrows at the top right of the page, above the blue band.
Click the >> arrows next to Messages to return to the default page.
If you want to send a message, enter the recipient's forum username in the 'To' field. You can send your message to more than one person.

Please take note of this warning, taken from the Help page:
By default, there is no way an administrator or anyone else can read your personal messages. Only you and the person you sent it to are able to read what you wrote. However, it is not impossible for one with access to the database of the forum to read them through the database with an SQL command. For this reason, it is advised to not send personal messages that contain private information that you don't wish for anyone else to read.

If you wish to receive copies of your PMs by email, go to Profile (at the top of forum pages).
Select Summary, then Personal Messaging under Modify Profile.
From the drop-down menu next to 'Notify by email every time you receive a personal message', select Always or From Buddies Only.
If you change your mind later, repeat the process and select Never.

Please note: if you receive notifications of PMs by email, you need to log on to the forum in order to reply to the PM.
Click the link at the bottom of the email that says:
Reply to this Personal Message here: http://forum.oldweather.org/index.php?action=pm;sa=send;f=inbox;pmsg=xxxx;quote;u=xxxx

Email notifications state clearly at the top: IMPORTANT: Remember, this is just a notification. Please do not reply to this email.
Replies to the notification email will not reach the forum or anybody else.
