Oldweather mondegreens
« on: February 17, 2011, 06:54:55 pm »
This shall henceforth be the official thread for these useless but amusing misreads.

So far we have, with "Panda" and "Fat George" additions:

"Boarded butch ship with Bed Slut by idiot. Sighted Fat George. Dated Lifebuoy. Abandon Sky"

(Transl. Boarded Dutch ship with Bed Sheet by accident. Sighted Fort George. Tested Lifebuoy. Abandon Ship")

And another mondegreen courtesy of randi_2's and my misreadings:

Panda empty. Hands to suffer. Hands murdered.

(Transl. Hands employed. Hands to supper. Hands mustered.)

It might be embellished with hyperlinks of the actual text for the misread elements. If someone were able to put little boxes with the misread text somewhere I could link to I will edit this.

I think it's a great idea to start this thread.  Unfortunately I find most of my misreadings on the Mantua are just complete gibberish.  However, I did puzzle for some time over:

"Passed posthumous float"

before it eventually resolved itself into "passed fisherman's float".

Could have sworn my logs said 'Sent 20 broken ratings to the "Donegal"'.

Turns out it's 'Stoker ratings', which is much less interesting.

Would be even better if it said; "HBM Political Agent and/or Camel arrived on board"  ;D

Elisabeth, that is the misread that started the whole thing going in my mind. As someone has said elsewhere, whenever I read "lost overboard by accident" my brain reads "... by idiot".

Maybe we could end up with a whole log :) and post a slow scroll down on Youtube one day :).

These are great.  Lost Overboard by an Idiot should be the title of the book we make a few years from now when all these have been collected.

What I saw:  Screwed to busy

What it really says:  Secured to buoy

I must admit to a certain amount of gutter thinking on that one, at first... ;D

'Brit. Consular centipede' (that was meant to be 'certificate', obviously).;)
