More of a cultural misunderstanding but Edinburgh Castle is in Montevideo and her crew is coaling (1093 tons in the day) and the log records the breaks for meals. One transcriber offers

'They drank Tea for half an hour'

which conjured up a picture of begrimed stokers solemnly sitting round tables sedately chatting over the china tea service

Love that mental picture!  ;D ;D ;D

With their little fingers delicately curled away from the cup handle  :D

  • Better to do it, than live with the fear of it.

Slight geographic mondegreen by a transcriber of HMS PERTH

The location is transcribed as "North of Persia". Not an easy place to get to in a ship with 20ft draft!!

It took me a few moments to spot that the location at 8pm was given as North of Perim

Those places are not even close, though I guess they do share the African continental shelf  ;D

Fun in Halifax?  It's Sunday 19th September 1915 and a transcriber has suggested 'Diversions - Divine Service' as one of the ways they spent the morning ....

Must have been an entertaining sermon with some hearty community singing. (Maybe they imported a ladies choir for the occasion?)

My guys on Leviathan must HATE 'Divisions - Divine Service' for it is almost always followed by 'Exercised Physical Drill.'   ::)

I think it's a common combination - after that sitting (or possibly standing) still, some exertion is called for.

Are you editing Leviathan?  I'm on Berwick at the moment and keep meeting you.  I've just finished September 1915, and we're moving between New York and Halifax.

Yes. There have been some 'issues' with transferring between Caro to check the edits as I finish each year. Still working that out.

it's March 1917 for me -- having met you in 1915 & 16!   ;)  I'm often between Halifax & Bermuda.

I've just reached the end of October 1915, we're back in Portsmouth, and the logs now jump to June 1916, so I'm making ground on you, though I don't expect I'll catch you up.
