Handwriting Examples by Letter (post 'em here, please)
« on: February 19, 2011, 01:39:14 am »

Hi, everyone.

The discussion about serifs and "c" and "d" highlights the need for some example pages showing different versions of key letters.  You can help by posting links to the log sheets where you find examples of letters that look different from the norm.  It's just like what we've done with the abbreviations topic.  Thanks to your help we have a pretty good list that we continue to compile.  Please make sure you include the link to the full log sheet.   Thanks.

A good page from Rinaldo with their version of capital P which I remember taking a while to get the hang of.  Also the capital F.  There are a lot of P's on this page - in Party and Patrol, and just one F, in Fly at 11.50.

And another very weird capital P from Rinaldo's sister ship Clio

Note the 09.10 Divisions and Prayers and the ship that they met at 1.00pm. After much deliberation I think it must be HMS Perth

Be careful not to mistake a 51 for a 57. I had one where the top line of the 5 joined the 1 to make it look like a modern 7. It was mainly because it was a jump in the temperature that I looked closely and saw that it did not look like a 1916 7, and then realized what had happened.
Sorry, I did not think about this list when I found it. I will keep an eye open for another example.

OK here is a 51 (previous and subsequent temperatures were 52, so I am fairly confident that this is 51 and not 57 - Also, the 1 doesn't go below the line like the 7's) and two 7's and a 57.

O that looks more like a G from the Patia (see 'October'): http://oldweather.s3.amazonaws.com/ADM_53-54563/ADM%2053-54563-004_0.jpg

I don't think wrongly transcribed numbers will be too much of an issue, actually. After all, those are the kind of mistakes which will get spotted most easily (partly because of contradictions between the different transcriptions and partly because of implausible rises and falls in the weather data), no?

Two Ts and a V :  " Torch Tuesday Vila"
And one N : "warrant No 29"

Added:  two Vs "via Vao Id." - yes, those really truly are Vs and not Gs.
             two Ns "NNW"

I agree, different transcribers should catch these problems. But you can't count on  implausible changes in the weather data. I picked a case where the average was 52, but I saw another where the average was 54! ;)

Unusual capital G (see 'Glasgow') from the part-time calligrapher who seems to be the Patia's new log-keeper:
http://oldweather.s3.amazonaws.com/ADM_53-54565/ADM%2053-54565-003_1.jpg
Note also the F which looks like a crossed-out J ('Friday') and the loopless g's which look like q's.

This is one of the wierdest 'F's I've ever seen - but I don't know what else it could be.  Torch was stripped of her experienced officers when we came into port, leaving me with a new log-keeper to get used to.  They are writing every code in all caps.

ADDED: the next day was Friday, proving it's an 'F'.
