When your aunt has one clue left to complete her crossword, and the answer is 'abeam' you can't imagine why she didn't know it  ;D

  • Better to do it, than live with the fear of it.

When playing Words with Friends (smartphone game very similar to Scrabble), you drive your own mom crazy by often playing nautical terms like DOGVANES.

Hehehe!  You mum will have to start finding the equivalence in weird words in the field of something she really enjoys :D

dogvane
NOUN
Nautical
A small, light vane of thread, cork, and feathers, placed on a gunwale or shroud to indicate the direction of the wind. Also in figurative contexts. Now historical.
Origin
Mid 18th century; earliest use found in William Falconer. From dog + vane, probably so called because smaller and hence inferior to the vane at the masthead.

Been using those for years. Called them 'telltales.'  You folks teach me new stuff all the time!

Thanks.

IT WAS NOT MY FAULT - I WAS JUST FOLLOWING ORDERS

Today I was doing volunteer work at the library. I was given a list of books that had a very low circulation to remove from the shelves to make room for new books. I was also told that if I thought a book was worth keeping, I could leave it. So, I took at least a glance at each book. I worked faithfully on my appointed task until I found Frozen in Time by Mitchell Zuckoff. A quick look at the blurb talked about a mission to rescue some downed pilots in Greenland. That didn't sound too interesting until they mentioned a Grumman Duck. WAIT A MINUTE! THAT WAS ONE OF OUR SHIPS! I looked for Northland in the index and, sure enough, there it was!

Unfortunately, it is not a happy ending except for the first two B-17 crewmen.

They lit the searchlight every night until another B-17 reported spotting the wreckage.

Oh my gosh! What an epic story!  I hope you left the book back on the shelf Randi - or did you liberate it to your own library?  ;)

Me Too!!!!!

The other thing that has been driving some of my friends bonkers is that because of my work with the Logs & all I have begun to spell like the English instead of 'American.' Theatre, honour, etc.  ;)

I like to think you're spelling like a Canadian!   ;D

I was going to say a sign of OW addiction is that I would sooner work on OW than do housework, but I don't think that really qualifies.  ;D
