General Godly + stalk.... huh?
« on: June 30, 2011, 01:09:21 pm »
Ok I know that this page mentions (correct me if i'm wrong) Chelmer and Endymion, however I ran into a bit that I think is important but cant read.

At...

4:00 What is the name of what I assume is a ship it has meet?

5:00 Does that say "Embarked General Godly ( have a feeling this is completely wrong! ;) ) + ?stalk? proceeded to Anzac" ?

6:10 "?? on Anzac landed general + something"

6:30 ?? Billion

thanks for taking a look I know probably half of what I wrote above is wrong. On a positive note the weather transcription are going great!   :P

Hi Sean. Welcome to OW forum. You havent provided a link to the relevant page.

The following explains how to do it. I am afraid I havent mastered shortening the link yet, so dont worry if that is all gobledegook unless you really want to. We can all cope with the long links.

We all love helping to read difficult writing so do have a go at posting the link to the page concerned.

All the best

K

Links in Posts
To create a link to the '.jpg' format of any log page

For Internet Explorer users:
  Right click the image,
click Properties at the bottom of the box,
then copy the URL next to Address
and paste it into your post.
For Firefox users:
  Right click the log page,
  click Copy Image Location,
then paste it into your post.
For Chrome users:
  Right click the log page,
  click Copy image URL,
then paste it into your post.

For Macs, right click or ctrl+click the log page
click Copy Image Address in Safari
click Copy Image Location in Firefox
then paste it into your post.

To create a link to any other picture or site page, follow the above instructions using that address URL.

Shortening your link:
~ To make your link look like this rather than this: http://oldweather.s3.amazonaws.com/ADM_53-45978/ADM%2053-45978-011_0.jpg ,
type 'this', for example, and highlight it.

~ Click the Insert Hyperlink icon, second from the left on the middle row of icons above the posting box, and the tags will appear around it.
~ In [url=http://, insert = (no spaces) and paste your copied URL.

The whole thing should look like this:
[url=http://oldweather.s3.amazonaws.com/ADM_53-45978/ADM%2053-45978-011_0.jpg]this]], insert = (no spaces) and paste your copied URL.

The whole thing should look like this:
[url=http://oldweather.s3.amazonaws.com/ADM_53-45978/ADM%2053-45978-011_0.jpg]this]
tags will appear around it.
~ In this], insert = (no spaces) and paste your copied URL.

The whole thing should look like this:
[url=http://oldweather.s3.amazonaws.com/ADM_53-45978/ADM%2053-45978-011_0.jpg]this
which produces this.
Of course, you can choose any word or words for your link using this method, for linking to any site page or online picture.

followed by Night Action

Beaten to it again, Well done LGB

Ok

I am struggling with the first one. My guess is that it is something to do with mail but I will perhaps leave that to one of the real experts.

I think I can help with the rest.

It is definitely "Embarked General Godley and staff and proceeded to Anzac" (Anzac is one of the bays on Gallipoli where they landed troops.)

Then I think it is "Arrived off Anzac. Landed General and staff"

The 6.30 entry seems to be "Exd night actions.". ie they exercised the action stations they take up at night. Clearly they needed them as they started engaging enemy positions later.

Hope this helps

So I'm left with the easy bits:

4.00 Closed Triad - (HMS Triad)

7.15 Closed beach

Thanks LGB, Tegwen and Bunt

That certainly does make sense, although I am disappointed (but not surprised) that he did not have a pet stalk.  :D

Just one more question about 8:00 in this next log. I read it as "8:00 opened fire on "Bahy you". It would be helpful if anyone could clarify that name aswell.

Thanks once again

So I'm left with the easy bits:

7.15 Closed beach

Am I right in thinking that closed Triad means the same as meeting Triad. If so does Closed beach mean getting closer to the beach?

Well, yes, "went towards" with a purpose e.g. to communicate or open fire.
Can't help with "Bahy You" except that it could be "Yov". Your guess looks to be a good one. There's a "T" on the next page which is different from this "Y".

Your comment about "sleep"; does that indicate a geographical interest in the Gallipoli event?

General Sir Alexander John Godley, officer commanding First Anzac Corps. The description of First War troops as "Lions led by donkeys" is often unfair to the generals, but not perhaps in the case of General Godley, who was responsible for the terrible massacre of Australian troops at the battle of Nek.

Of mild interest, the ship General Godly arrived on was a yacht!

Hired Yacht HMS TRIAD, 1212 ton, launched 1909, 2 x 12 pounder guns, HQ ship requisitioned 19th February 1915, eventually purchased 19th June 1919. Became a Special Service Vessel 1st January 1920 sold May 1933.

I'd put the 8pm ship down as a Turkish ship which cannot be googled, my best guess "Bahy Yoo"

Thanks everyone for your help. The extra information and history is interesting and in my opinion is one of the best things about this site.

Yes, very observant, I am from Australia.

Ah.
Well, if you observed any comment (addressed to Caro) appearing to be a derogatory remark about Australia, it wasn't from me. Honest.
<fingers crossed>
I think it's a fine country and the people are wonderful.
 :)
(That should do the trick.)

It's mutual. I hear that the first geography lesson in your schools is "England - that's where all the convicts come from".
To misquote John Cleese : "Don't mention the cricket".  ::)
