What is BOINC?
Quote
The Berkeley Open Infrastructure for Network Computing (BOINC) is an open source middleware system for volunteer and grid computing. It was originally developed to support the SETI@home project before it became useful as a platform for other distributed applications in areas as diverse as mathematics, medicine, molecular biology, climatology, and astrophysics. The intent of BOINC is to make it possible for researchers to tap into the enormous processing power of personal computers around the world.
(Wikipedia)

What is climateprediction.net (CPDN)?
Quote
Climateprediction.net is a distributed computing project [running under BOINC] to produce predictions of the Earth's climate up to 2100 and to test the accuracy of climate models. To do this, we need people around the world to give us time on their computers - time when they have their computers switched on, but are not using them to their full capacity.
http://climateprediction.net/

In September 2011 Randi and Caro formed a BOINC team with members of the Old Weather project. Philip Brohan from the science team lent his support:
I'd like to second Randi's recommendation of climateprediction.net. It's a different sort of citizen science (your computer does the work, not you) but it's just as valuable as OldWeather in extending our understanding of how the climate works. Give it a try - you could participate in CPDN and OldWeather at the same time - your computer can be simulating the climate of the future while you read the logbooks and recover the climate of the past.

It's not likely that we'll be using CPDN for building the weather reconstructions anytime soon - technical issues make the problem more suited to conventional supercomputers - but I am thinking about it.

If you have any problems post your question at the bottom of this thread or check here http://climateapps2.oerc.ox.ac.uk/cpdnboinc/quick_faq.php

Click here to see the list of members in the OW team ClimatePrediction.net stats for OW team. You get credits for donating your excess computer capacity. These don't buy you anything but satisfaction  ;D. The more time you donate and the more powerful your computer, the more credits you accumulate.

In addition to the Climateprediction.net project, BOINC hosts a number of other distributed computing projects. The following table shows the different projects the OW team members are running on their computers. CPDN accounts for almost 40% of our credits. You might consider also running the SETI project (search for extra terrestial intelligence) or MilkyWay in case the earth becomes uninhabitable for humans. This is a long shot, of course.  ;D
Notes:
  • Even if Climateprediction.net is your main interest, you might want to have another project or two to run when CPDN doesn't have any tasks available.
  • If Climateprediction.net projects are too demanding for your computer (they are not generally recommended for laptops) try another project! You will still earn credit for the OW team ;)

Oops. Sorry Randi, as you may know by now, I have jumped the gun and set up an Old Weather team for climateprediction.net
If you would all rather have a Zooniverse team, I will change the name and description, or set up another team, or we can have the OW team just for climateprediction.

Ideas please.  ;D

How about this for a name and description:

HMS Zooniverse

Climate research - A science we can help with.  Our ongoing mission - transcribe ship's logs and dedicate our computers to BOINC.  To boldly transcribe and compute where no group of disparate people have ever transcribed and computed before.

Our symbol can be Caro's picture of a ship and the moon.

Either of those options sounds good to me, but how do I get to be a Cool Kid (tm) and join either team?  Oh, please pick me pick me pick me!  Who me,  a insecure geek?  Never!   ;D

Frankly, just by virtue of working on Old Weather, you become automatically one of THE coolest people on the planet!  ;)

Anyone who has downloaded the BOINC software can join. All welcome!
Randi has included the links in her post above.
I am happy to keep the Old Weather team if that is what most people want but I will leave it for the rest of you to discuss.
If somebody else wants to set up a Zooniverse team that is fine with me.  ;D

I waited too long to post :'(

Logically ;D we have 4 possibilities:

1 - OW team for climateprediction.net (what Caro has created)
2 - OW team for all BOINC projects (Perhaps we could do this and compete with other Zooniverse projects - fine for most of us, but a problem for people who don't have a favorite Zooniverse project)
3 - Zooniverse team for climateprediction.net (which probably doesn't make sense)
4 - Zooniverse team for all BOINC projects (my original idea)

And a POSSIBLE 5'th - Have both 1 and 4 (From reading, I'm not sure if you can be in different teams on different projects or not - I haven't quite had the courage to test it myself)

Feedback please....

As far as I know you can only belong to one team but you can leave it and join another at any time.
More tomorrow.  ;)

I notice that several people mentioned doing Seti.
Keep in mind that if you choose Option No. 1, there will be no OW team for Seti.

I've seen that, but I'm not sure if that means 1 team in BOINC or 1 team per project - it may also depend whether or not teams are project or BOINC.  ::) ???

In addition to this; a satellite is about to fall on my head, and in case it misses, there's a back-up in November, "Einstein was wrong" and neutrinos travel through wormholes. All in one day.
My brain hurts.
Mind you, I never really trusted Albert. In my view, anyone who shares my hairstyle should be regarded with suspicion.

well, I think it fitting that a team from Old Weather do the weather one - climateprediction.net.  Circle of life and all that  ;D

that is my vote -

I'm not arguing with that!!!  ;D

What I was asking is if you want an OW team that does ONLY climateprediction.net (which MIGHT allow a Zooniverse team) or an OW team that you can also represent when/if you do other projects.
Apologies if I am coming on a bit strong, but I just want to make things clear (at least as I understand it) :-[
(the team setup is more subtle than it first seems and, in my opinion, not well explained by BOINC - perhaps you could think of local and global teams.)

We want you on the team!
Have you installed BOINC yet? Go ahead and start running some projects! You can join a team at any time. ;D
