Welcome on board shippeb 8)

THank you!  It's so nice to not be picked last for the team :)   So far it's for some reason downloaded two models and is at just over 2% on both of them.  Slow work... almost as slow as my progress on Yarmouth.
YOU are picking the team - and we're glad you did!

The climate models tend to be 10 to 100 times the size of most of my other projects, so they do indeed take a long time to finish. I am currently running 2 that are listed as about 400 hours. (an earlier 400 hour model had a computation error after about 200 hours :'()

(I'm not too sure how accurate the time estimates are. One project noted they were general estimates not based on the actual computer speed - I sometimes went up to 120% on the progress)

I'd join, but my parents don't want me downloading software. They think it'll slow down the computer.  :P

Tell them that if you tell it not to run, it won't affect the computer's speed at all.  You can define how much or little of the computer's memory it should use when it is running, and if no one's using the computer they won't notice that it's slowed down (if a piece of software runs in the forest and no one is there...).

I have not yet tried for example to use photoshop on a large image while also running the BOINC models, but since it will relinquish memory as needed, I don't think it would have an impact.

The last day or so, I've been letting it run while my laptop reads me a book (The Surgeon's Mate) and I knit.  Why not use the capacity that's going unused?

I wish they would listen to that, but it seems like they are AFRAID of technology (ironic because my dad's an engineer). I asked if I could join the World Memory Project, which only requires a free typing software from them, but they were too afraid of the program. Ah well, when I get my own laptop, then I'll help out.  ;D

I hadn't heard of World Memory Project before - that's a wonderful idea.  I don't have the time to do it tho :(

For projects I am not running, I have only verified that the Old Weather team is available.
On the projects that I am running, I have joined (or attempted to join) the Old Weather team and noted any problems. So far I have found 2 (eOn and Einstein) where  the Old Weather team was listed, but I was not given the option to join it (though at least some other teams had that option). Caro and I will look into it.

If you find problems please send me a PM and I will note it in this list and Caro and I will look into it.

Caro and I will continue to update this list (she was told that it can take up to 48 hours for a team to be added).

Still more to come (such as SETI)!

If you were interested in the news from CERN, SIXTRACK  (now with OW team) is one of their projects.

There's also an Old Weather team for the Rosetta project - I've just moved my totals across!

Excellent. Thanks Geoff and welcome thursdaynext.  ;D

Just a note: I opted to run climateprediction.net while my laptop was idle.
In the BOINC manager, under Tools/Computing preferences, where the default amount is 25% for 'Where processor usage is less than .... '
I had to change the figure to zero (no restriction).
The climateprediction program was not kicking in when my laptop was idle, probably because of Skype.

I run BOINC all the time and (almost) never notice any impact. On very rare occasions, with certain projects, if I have been away for a while, when I come back the computer is initially slow to respond but then runs normally.

The BOINC screen savers are fun to watch, but they do divert processor time from the actual work. I have set mine to blank after 10 minutes (Control Panel - Screen Saver - Settings button).

I used to run the climate prediction project a few years ago until it crashed, at which point I lost heart with it because it could not be restarted.  But I'm willing to give it another go!  ;D

I've signed up for the Enigma project as well and joined the OW team (just me and Caro, apparently).

So far, I've been told there is nothing to process on the climate change project, but I seem to be happily running something on Enigma!

Su, if you click 'Total members' on the page for the Old Weather team for climateprediction.net, you will see that there are now seven of us.
A severe lack of gentlemen, I might add.
My first lot of data for climateprediction is due to take around 570 hours and finish just before Christmas.  :D

But I think it's just you and me on Enigma (so far).

Sorry Su. I misread your post.
I am not on Enigma.
My name is there because I am the founder of the team. I think.  ;)

szukacz is that you I see on Einstein@home?
There is someone from Poland on the Old Weather team (I don't seem to show up yet)

I see there is going to be Snooker in Poland this week!
