On 4 pts
« on: January 28, 2012, 05:00:42 pm »
A couple of times now the Hildebrand has recorded a direction as "on 4 pts", eg:

Staalberg Huk on 4 pts

I've not been able to find an answer through Google, so I'm hoping someone who knows a bit about sailing can explain what this means!

Or ... possibly, mathematically speaking guessing:
1 pt = 11.25 degrees,
4 pts =    45    "
so, in the direction of midway between dead ahead and abeam.
Perhaps.

That's right. You tell 'em.
We shouldn't have allowed women on board.

It's the Staalberg Huk who we (or certainly I) am envisaging in these less than dignified ways - as a loyal member of the Hildebrand's crew I would never make fun of her - honest!

Oh, I see - I'm sorry to have to tell you that Staalberg Huk is a place, not another ship!  ::)

I don't know, I've come to the conclusion that there is no name too bizarre to have been given to an early 20th century merchant vessel!

Right then - is there anybody out there who knows the answer to my perfectly sensible question, please?!  :D

I'm hurt.  :(
How many answers to your perfectly sensible question do you want?
Is there any other mention of Staalberg Huk on that page, that would indicate approach, pass, receeding? Same question applies to the previous occurrences of "on n pts".
I think my perfectly sensible assumption is a distinct possibility and if there is someone who actually knows that it is correct, he/she may not bother to confirm. On the other hand, if it were wrong, I would have been directed to stand in the nearest corner.

Please accept my sincere apologies for any distress or inconvenience caused to you.  :-*

Just one correct answer, please!

No, that's the only mention of the landmark in question.

I agree it's a possibility, but you did say it was a guess!

Where's dorbel when you need him?

Modesty has continually been my downfall.  ;D

dorbel is probably working to solve the mystery of Hanibal94's huge sea-bed banjo:
