RN HMS Hilary - March 1915 - repeated
« on: April 30, 2012, 01:24:25 pm »
Just though I'd mention that the first half of March 1915 is repeated, first in a rather poor hand, and then the whole of March comes in a rather elegant hand.

It's not caused me any problems and I'm happily past it, but though you might like to be warned of it

That happens to every ship which has both an original log book and copy log books, which have an overlap few days.  The team loves it, it lets them judge the accuracy of the copyists.  :)

Assuming that my Captain has transcribed both copies, do you want other transcribers to do so too?  I have an interest in the answer, as I'm at present in mid-January on HMS Hilary ....
I'll do it if it's going to be helpful, but if one copy of the overlap is enough, I'll happily jump over it (assuming of course that I get those logs).

The simplest answer is, do all weather readings given.  Much easier than trying to figure out what others have done.

For the notes, the answer remains, do only those that interest you. :)

Just to let the scientists know - I've transcribed 1st to 24th March 1915 on HMS Hilary twice - it's two log books, not one book scanned twice, as the writing is definitely different.

That's what happens when copied and original logs overlap.  The original logs start whenever the current voyage started and remain with the ship for the entire voyage, usually about a year.  Every month, a copy of that gets made starting with the 1st of the month, and sent back to the Admiralty soonest possible.  This is why we have records of ships that were lost at sea.  When our team asks the Admiralty for a certain year of logs, and they start that year with an original log and finish it with copied logs, you always get that overlap for the month that started or finished the voyage.

And the team loves to see both - it gives them a measure of accuracy for the copyist. :)
