Two illegible ships
« on: June 23, 2012, 05:23:52 am »
Can anyone decipher the name of the barque to which Hilary spoke in the morning, and which ship had already put an armed guard on board her?

I'm guessing "Lysglint" - she has a photo that must be her final days at sea, and a 1906 mention in a Pensacola, Florida, Shipping List.

The other I'm not sure about.

I've encountered "Virginian" a couple of times before, and with the "V" mashed up like that between a 'g' an an 'f' it's hard to read, but I think that could be your ship.

Even better :).
'One of our ships', it's like you guys got your own fleet ;). I love how easy it is to start saying 'our ship' or 'my logkeeper'.
But could it have been Virginian? Where was she at the time?

Thank you all very much - I had wondered about Virginian as we've met before, but thought I wouldn't put ideas into your heads.  Would never have got Lysglint on my own.
And I love it when we turn out to have all the pieces of the jigsaw on OW somewhere - among 'our' ships.   :D

Looks like Virginian to me.  She was another 10th Cruiser Squadron ship engaged on the same task, so quite reasonable that's where the armed guard originated from.

Definitely, going by Lat.Long. and "Lysglint"!
Logs from March 1916

Where and how did you put together the search for Lat.Long. and "Lysglint"  ???

Virginian is in our completed fleet with VAL.  I did exactly that from her vessel page, and sampled the logs at very widely spaced intervals until I approximated the right month.  Then found the same day.  Then jumped back a day or two looking for when she sent over the guards.  ;D

On the JPEG links - NOT the editing pages - you can manually walk your way up and down a specific logbook by changing the ---0xy_0 or ---0xy_1.  It's called cheating.   ;)

It's not called 'cheating', it's called 'dedication to the cause'.
Well done.
