Bit pooped tonight - tomorrow I'll update the list of glitches, hitches, and annoying moments when your addiction to OW is thwarted and you sit in a jibbering heap wondering how many minutes more the Zooniverse or internet is going to have you itching to hit the keyboard keys again in a hope to SAVE THE PLANET :)

I've updated the list above to date & time. If anyone has any ideas as to how the problems are being generated please do let me know here. I'll raise the list with the Zooniverse IT-ers again and report back if any ideas come from that end of things.  Please keep reporting things here. Who knows when another entry here might ring the right bell somewhere and get a fix sorted for us.  :)

         Date............|       UTC start......|   UTC end.......|          Ship................|      Notes
   05-12-16         14:19      14:22      Yorktown      Craig
   06-12-16         11:00      12:13      Yorktown      Maikel
07-12-16              18:10      18:15      Patterson      Helenj - Had to close before UTC end
10-12-16              22:31      22:35      Thetis      jil - getting no response when clicking on 'I've finished'. Cleared a few minutes later
10-12-16              22:33                  Bob - no response from classic.oldweather &'CloudFront attempted to establish a connection with the origin, but either the attempt failed or the origin closed the connection.' & 'The classic.oldweather.org page isn't working classic.oldweather.org is currently unable to handle this request. HTTP ERROR 503'. Not ship log related
   11-12-16             0:55            Patterson      mapurves

20-12-16             5:02      5:17      Patterson      mapurves: This is odd, because opening another window, I can bring up a page for Yorktown, but my page for Patterson won't go. Anyway, I reloaded the page, and re-did the entries, and the page went.  FROM Pommy Stuart Michael, looking at the time stamps they are close.  4:44:13 AM GMT & 5:02:50 AM  GMT Maybe they are backing up that server at that time?  mapurves: 'Maybe. The last case is interesting, because I could download a page for Yorktown, but I couldn't upload a page for Patterson. When I reloaded the page, and re-entered the weather, it went up OK'
   26-12-16             19:08      19:23   Jamestown1844   Randi, Monday. Yes, I was stuck on a finished page. About 15 minutes.
09-01-17             8:20      8:44   Yorktown      Maikel: OW Classic seems to be down, can?t connect to it, 08:44, it's back again'
10-01-17             11:46      12:15   Yorktown      "Maikel: After logging in, I receive the message: 'The page you were looking for doesn't exist. You may have mistyped the address or the page may have moved.'  It's an authentication failure message, yet Panoptes claims I am signed in. Signing out and then in again doesn't change anything. Half an hour later all is working as usual again.  RANDI: I get that sometimes too, but if I go to the page I want to transcribe, I am logged in. I just tried it now and didn't have any errors. If it isn't preventing transcribing, it might not be worth mentioning it to the developers.  MAIKEL: The message is the only thing I saw, the rest of the page was blank. So yes, it was hindering transcribing to the extreme, I didn't get any page to transcribe. RANDI: Sorry - I am seeing something different.
When I ask for the page again right after my error message I do get the page."

18-01-17             11:36      11:39      Unalga1      propriome: Confirmed (with reference to Craig's problem at 18.01.2017 at 11:30) At the moment I get a 503 (service unavailable) response too.
18-01-17             11:23      --:--             Stuart: Its been working fine down. Never (yet) had any of those messages. A tad slow some days... Usual times for me 19:00 to 06:00 UTC
20-01-17             14:23      14:43      Yorktown      Craig: Haven't been able to save my page on Yorktown

30-01-17      6:15      6:58      Albatross 1890      Hurlock: Tried to do a page of WRs but back to the sorry message when I tried to save it.
30-01-17      9:00            Albatross 1890      "Hurlock: Some issues trying to get onto the site at 9.00 again (same sorry message).  I could get on from the link in the forum.  Possibly an issue with my bookmark -maybe linked to Albatross 1890 being finished.  I have done another bookmark.
Randi: Yes, I think the old bookmark is the problem. I don't have any problems getting on to the site from https://classic.oldweather.org/ships/
I get the Sorry message for Albatross 1890, but Albatross 1900 works fine."
30-01-17      15:55            Albatross 1890      Hurlock: Getting a whitescreen for everything now - including the link from the forum and the link in the message above.
30-01-17      18:52                  Randi: ... much later ... https://classic.oldweather.org/ships/ working for me in Firefox. Is anyone currently having problems?
30-01-17      19:34                  mapurves: It's all fine for me... (slow start to the day)  :(
31-01-17      6:30            Albatross 1900      mapurves: 5 minute delay saving finished page.  Saved page multiple times.
02-02-17      6:30      6:40      Albatross 1890      Hurlock: Getting a whitescreen for all the OW links I try.
05-02-17      0:41      0:53      Unalga1      mapurves: I just tried to log in. Got the "We're sorry" message. 11 minutes 51 seconds
14-02-17      6:30      6:40      Albatross 1900      Hurlock: Albatross 1900 not accepting finished page for about 10 mins
16-02-17      6:30      6:40      Albatross 1900      Hurlock: 06.30 am again.  White screen this time.  06.40 loaded pages slowly.
17-02-17      6:30      6:40      Albatross 1900      Hurlock: 06.30 GMT Not accepting finished page for nearly 10 mins.
23-02-17      14:47            Yorktown      "Craig: Just got this message when I was saving a full page: 'Quote: We're sorry, but something went wrong. We've been notified about this issue and we'll take a look at it shortly.'
Caro: Tweet from Zooniverse, seven minutes ago: 'Some technical issues mean you might not be able to access your favourite projects just now. Take a wee break, we'll have it fixed ASAP!'
Craig: I thought it was a browser issue but I can get pages for other ships. I was doing 03/02/1919 on the Yorktown yesterday and I got the Sorry message when I tried to save. Today I get the same message. Naval History says the ship arrived in San Diego on 15/02/1919 and it was decommissioned in June at Mare Island. We were on the way Acapulco so I haven't finished the ship yet. Can anybody else get a Yorktown page?
Randi: Yes. I get http://oldweather.s3.amazonaws.com/ow3/final/USS%20Yorktown/vol025of040/vol025of040_319_0.jpg"
28-02-17      17:40                  HelenJ & Dean: Two editors have found they can't get any more pages on the ships they're editing - me on Berwick, and Dean on Leviathan.  Me at about 5.40pm GMT, and Dean about half an hour later.  I tried manipulating the page ID but that didn't work either.
28-02-17      18:40                  "Maikel: I was just looking into the same problem. Apparently Amazon is having problems with it's cloud storage. The log-book page images are stored there. https://status.aws.amazon.com/

Identified - Issues are caused by a larger Amazon Web Services outage affecting all of their customers. Right now serving images seems to be restored, but uploads aren't.

Investigating - We're currently aware of some issues with our site. We are investigating the cause and it seems this may be an upstream provider issue. We will provide further updates as we have them.  Posted about 7 hours ago by Cam Allen"

Glad to hear it's back. (In reply to Lollia Paolina)"

Randi: Same for me - I'll send another message"
02-03-17      19:39                  "Bob: It's working for me. If you see the 'Something wrong' message, go up to the URL: https://classic.oldweather.org/transcribe  ...and delete everything but the root: https://classic.oldweather.org/   ...and hit enter.

05-03-17      19:16      20:28            "Pommy Stuart: Albatross 1900. 7:10 UTC 5 March. Login in this morning, had my first 'Something went wrong' for a few years.   It's back for now (20:31 UTC). Spoke to soon did a few pages then Interface hung 08:25 UTC. Can still see images by copying URL but cannot work on them.
Seems server is working but interface is down.
'Back up for me.' [noted in reply #657]

07:30 here. Time to get dressed and get the mower out."
05-03-17      20:30      20:40            "Leelaht: down for me, ditto Hanibal94's message, 20:39 UT (I think, mental calculation).
[Hanibal94: It's down! 'Quote: The classic.oldweather.org page isn't working. classic.oldweather.org is currently unable to handle this request. HTTP ERROR 503' . First noticed: 10:07 AM UTC]

Back up 10 min later"
06-03-17      13:20                  Randi: I had this reply from the technical side: 'Quote: I was out of the office, but I think this was a failure of either the server that runs the site or the OW classic web app itself. The system generally detects such failures and recovers by itself'
13-03-17      6:30      6:38            Hurlock: 06.30 getting white screen. Was working fine earlier. Back at 06.38.
24-03-17      22:24                  "Hanibal94: 'Quote: This page isn?t working. classic.oldweather.org is currently unable to handle this request. HTTP ERROR 503'.
"
24-03-17      22:31                  Hurlock: I am getting a white screen when I try to get on the site.
   24-03-17      23:34                  Hanibal94: It's working for me again
04-04-17      17:09      17:26            Hanibal94: 'Quote: This page isn't working: classic.oldweather.org is currently unable to handle this request. HTTP ERROR 503.'  17:26 It's back again
06-04-17      20:00      20:30            Hanibal94 at around 20:00 - 20:30 GMT, both OW Classic and the forum were EXTREMELY slow, even though other sites were fine.
   07-04-17      17:16      17:28            "Hanibal94: Today, starting at around 17:16 GMT, I get HTTP Error 503 again.
I hate to say this, but if the situation doesn't improve, I will probably just quit OW Classic and go work on a different Zooniverse project. It's just really frustrating to see the interface failing so often!

EDIT: It's back at 17:28 GMT"
10-04-17                        "Randi: Is there a time of day or a day of the week that has more problems that other times/days?
Hanibal94 replies: In my case, it's usually around 17:00 to 21:00 GMT, but that might be biased - on weekdays, that's the only time I can transcribe, and I don't do nearly as much as I used to."
14-04-17      15:20                  "Hanibal94: HTTP Error 503 again. Started at 15:19 GMT. I was skipping through some duplicate pages on the Yorktown (she has lots of inserts). One of them was slow, but went through. The next wouldn't react at all, so I tried opening the ship's homepage in a new tab, and that's when I got the error.
'Quote: ... The system generally detects such failures and recovers by itself.'
I believe that, but it does seem to take a while to recover - in this case, I noticed it was back at 15:32 GMT, although it may rebooted a few minutes earlier."
20-04-17      5:56                  Hurlock: White screen when I try to transcribe or get on the OW site 5.55am
   20-04-17      8:43                  Caro: It's working at 8.43am BST.
30-04-17      1:07      1:49            Pommy Stuart: Page send lockup Yorktown @01:07 UTC. After reading my latest New Scientist Mag, retried and my page went.
30-04-17      1:15      1:32            Randi: Ditto - can't get to the "All Ships" page - UTC 01:15 (30 April).  Looks like it is back - UTC 01:32

Thank you everyone for so assiduously registering your delays. It's worth continuing to register them. There are changes in the pipeline, but they will take some time (for this read a few months) to arrive because of the work involved. My concern is that, if we stop noting problems, something might turn up that is relevant to the changes and we will not be able to pass on helpful details. The problems noted above have been reviewed.
I'm sorry not to be able to provide definite dates, or to guarantee an amazing recuperation soon.
Thank you again  :)
