I did work on Old Almanac earlier this year and have just come back for the Arctic pages. I'm having a little trouble adjusting to these new books  ... having the date on the second page is very confusing, since it's hard to go backwards.

I have one big problem with the interface: the transcription box is attached to the magnifier, so when I move the magnifier around to double-check something, it can push the transcription box off the screen so I can't see the part of the box where I want to type the information. The two should be independent.

Also - the page I'm wrestling with has no lat/long, and the location appears to be "Cape Barnabar" or something like that on Kodiak Island - can't read it. I can't find any modern reference to a Cape Barnabas or Bamabar or anything like that ... any ideas?

Welcome to the forum and OW, DWBinNH.  The team's software extends the date and location on one of the pages backwards or forwards to the other, so you don't have to do that "backwards" at all - just Type What You See.

Very frequently, ships go by landmarks rather than lat/long.  The team has good nautical charts and can place the ship by that.

We are very aware that all these logs are more complicated than most of the RN logs we worked on earlier.  I recommend you look at the very extensive Guides for US logs and the various helpful posts listed in HELPFUL REFERENCE POSTS, all of which are parked in the FAQ board.  They are doing some very interesting things up in the arctic. :)

As to locating Alaskan places, there are good NOAA nautical charts here http://www.charts.noaa.gov/OnLineViewer/AlaskaViewerTable.shtml that has a 'Barnabus Rock' in Chart 500.

I am getting a mix of DR and Obs lat/longs for the same hour. Do I put them in separate entries so that they can be distinguished? I remember asking Janet this question before and she was going to check.

Please give a link, and I will pass the question on to Philip.

(My guess would be that they should be kept separate :-\ - to do this you will probably have to click OK and then close.)
