"Historical Lighthouses of Japan" describes 23 lighthouses built in Meji era (1868-1912).

Caution : spellings may vary.
Example : "Oma saki Lt" logged at 2255 may probably be the lighthouse spelled "Omae Saki" in that website.

Should I say once again how much a curious guy like me enjoys OldWeather ?  ;)

Thank you yann_l!

Given that we have a Chinese translation service in this thread, I think we need a Japanese one too!

It turns out that many Japanese features are named quite easily, as it's often very easy to work out what type of feature they are. Below is a brief compilation, mainly from these sources:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Japanese_place_names
http://www.applet-magic.com/japanlan.htm
http://www.nauticalchartsonline.com/chart/zoom?chart=96943 (see Glossary, centre bottom)
The links contain additional words if you're really interested, but below are the more common nautical-related terms:

JapaneseEnglish
DakeMountain
GawaRiver
GyokoFishing Harbor
HamaBeach
HantoPeninsula
HotoOld
JimaIsland
KawaRiver
KaikyoStrait
KoHarbor or Lake
MisakiPoint or Cape
NadaSea or Gulf
NeRock or Reef
SakiPoint or Cape
SanMountain
SeShoal
ShimaIsland
ShinNew
SimaIsland
SuidoChannel
TakeMountain
TodaiLighthouse
ToudaiLighthouse
UraInlet or Cove
WanBay
YamaMountain
ZakiPoint or Cape
ZanMountain

Many terms translate very easily - for example, "Yokohama-ko" is Yokohama Harbor, "Tateyama-wan" is Tateyama Bay, and so on. You can even break those names up even further - Tateyama-wan comes out as "Steep Mountain Bay" (or something!).

Edit: And then I wandered into Russian territory, so I now I need a new list!

Translations grabbed from:
http://www.nauticalchartsonline.com/chart/zoom?chart=96500 (see Glossary, middle left)
http://www.doukhobor.org/Terms-Geographic.htm

RussianEnglish
BankaBank
BukhtaBay
GoraMountain
GorkaMountain
GubaBay
KamenRock
KanalChannel
KosaSpit
LimanEstuary or Bay
Mel'Shoal
MoreSea
MysPoint or Cape
OkeanOcean
OstrovIsland
OstrovaIslands
PoluostrovPeninsula
ProlivStrait
RifReef
SkalaRock
SopkaMountain or Volcano
VulcanVolcano
ZalivBay or Gulf

Again, translations are quite easy - Mys Dezhneva is Cape Dezhnev, Beringov proliv is the Bering Strait, and so on.

And now comes a Japanese place name dump - most are on the South and East coasts of Honshu, with a couple on Hokkaido, but coverage is patchy based on when the Albatross was near the Japanese coast!

Hi Danny,

For Russia we have a separate reference thread and a discussion thread... will check if the terms you've added to this one are already in the Russian placenames thread.
