Thetis -- Crew Lists
« on: November 01, 2012, 08:12:25 am »
If you run across crew lists, please post the link to the pages here - like we did for the instrumentation pages.  There seem to be 2 types of pages - lists of sailors joining the ship, and then one for those who died or left the ship.  It isn't necessary to transcribe the names, but if you are feel like, please go right ahead.  At some point, the names from these lists will be added to the SODA database.
Thanks,
Kathy

Any ideas for Muller?
Looks like a J changed to an N or vice versa?

Uhm..

It resembles Vilhelm/Wilhelm... but the starting letter looks really an N... Nilhelm? Does it exist? :)

I think I will go with Vilhelm.
It could be a J overwritten with a V.

A short adventure:

24 June 1888
At 10:45 [pm] a man ran away from ship on the wharf.  Master-at-arms inspected berth deck & reported A. Erickson absent from ship.

25 June 1888
At 12.10 sent Master-at-arms into the village to find & return to the ship A. Erickson (Seaman).  At 12.20 by order of Commanding Officer A Erickson (Seaman) was confined in double irons for safe keeping.

They were in Unalaska at the time, so I am not sure what Mr. Erickson thought he might do next.  ;D

Oh, I was thinking the "old ball and chain" type of irons.  The real thing looks horribly uncomfortable.  I will be sure to avoid bad behavior which might land me in double irons (and safekeeping).

It took them all of 10 minutes of searching to find him? Guess there aren't many places to hide in Unalaska!

And things did not get better for poor A Erickson:  3 July 1888

At 10.20 a Summary Court consisting of R Lopez, ensign, senior member, TG Dewey & Roger Welles, Jr. Ensigns & members, asst pay JQ Lovell, recorder, convened in the cabin for the trial of Alfred Erickson (SM ~)

http://oldweather.s3.amazonaws.com/ow3/final/USS%20Thetis/vol006of024/vol006_172_1.jpg

This is the second case I have come across where the outcome of the trial is not given.  Is that typical?  I would assume there is a formal process for reporting the findings of the court up the chain of command.
