OK, he is now officially a SM Mate in the record.  Thanks for the info.

I should be on the 10th tomorrow - so I will have to wait!

Got the sentence for Alfred - pretty rugged for a 12 hour jaunt.

At 9am set jib and at 9.30 went to quarters then to muster & read findings & sentence of the Summary Court Martial in the case of A Erickson (SMM) which was: Solitary Confinement for 30 days in double irons on bread & water, full rations every fifth day & to lose three months pay amounting to 123 dollars.

Sentence of court affirmed by Commanding Officer.

This last phrase is inserted above the final portion of the sentence.  There is more to the insertion which I cannot read.

~ sentence of court approved by Command'g Off.   that part relating to loss of pay wh. was respectfully referred to the Secretary of the Navy
 :-\

wh. = which ?

Not too sure about "that" in "that part"

If you transcribe those comments, be sure to transcribe them as they are written (as much as possible!).
For example, Off. instead of Officer

Editing the comments when posting them here is fine ;D

Thank you Randi - you have a sharp eye.

I am thinking it may be:

This part relating to . .

Something was erased or smudged out - it looks like the end of "Officer" and the start of another word, but I do not think we will ever know.

I have updated the transcription.  (and fixed my auto-completion of Commanding Officer - as they routinely spell it out completely and I was already squinting at the next phrase)

One success, one failure it seems.

Two years for first promotion. two more in subsequent years, then 17 years wait between Lt and LtCmdr!  Only 8 until he made Commander - that must have been a relief.  In 1906 he was made Rear Admiral, according to the documents.  (Today there is a rank of Captain between Commander and Rear Admiral but not sure what was in effect in 1900)  Quite an impressive career - except that long stint as a Lieutenant.  He definitely looks the part of Fleet Commander in the photo.  A bit pompous - but my dad always looked pompous in his uniform :)

Nice to learn more about my ship's commanding officer!

Passed
Having passed an examination for promotion, and awaiting a vacancy in the senior grade: as, a passed assistant surgeon in the United States navy; a passed assistant engineer - http://www.wordnik.com/words/passed

I have never seen a passed Lt, but it might be that even though he was qualified for the rank of LtCmdr he had to wait until there was a vacancy :-\
