Log Size Guestimations
« on: January 17, 2013, 12:10:11 pm »
These are some things I have made for fun: Estimations of how large the active ships are, a summary of the completed ships, and the total number of all WR transcribed.
If there are any problems, issues or anything else, please send me a PM. I update this once a day.

Notes:
- The active ships only contain the work done by the top 12 transcribers, because those are the only values displayed by the interface.
- The % complete indicator on a ship's home page rounds to the nearest whole number. So a ship displayed as 47% complete could actually be 46.7% or 47.23% complete, for example.
- Some ships have more or less than 24 WR/day. I have marked all the cases I know of, please PM me with an example page if I missed any.
- The Years of Service may be inaccurate due to out-of-order or missing logs. I have marked the most unreliable vessels with a tilde: ~
- The values for the completed ships come directly from the database (I won't say how I managed that - it's a secret) and thus contain all the WR, not just the top 12.

I think you have calculated the total transcriptions for each ship, Hanibal94, and not the number left to do?

The Jeannette has 52896 in total, and 38614 left to do. Divided by 3 transcribers that leaves 12871 to do for each person on average, which would be 526 pages.

We won't run out of work anytime soon.  :)

I'm not sure the science team has the same perspective we do on that  :D

Rodgers is complete (although not VAL). Congrats to all who worked on her, particularly Avast and stuart.

The guestimations for Bear, Patterson and Yukon have been changed due to the removal of duplicate logs.

The page URLs on Concord, Jeanette and Vicksburg helpfully say how many log books there are in total.
Would it be possible to do this for all US ships?

No, because they are assigned at the time of scanning and never after that changed.  For all our current scans, either that is there or not there.  I've noticed with the Phase 1 & 2 books from the RN, the format between logbooks is not consistent, it depends on the scan operator.

In terms of future logs, it's not a bad idea, for the archives.  Bear in mind: if they are counting the volumes in the Archives and not the volumes to be scanned, that total count may be erroneous for the OW content.

Thetis has been added. The four Jamestowns will also be entered individually once they have at least 3%. All four have been added.

Out of curiosity, why does the stats section on the home page show 0 voyages done, when 2 ships are showing as 100% transcribed?

Because you just pointed out something that needs fixing?  I'll pass this up the line.  Thanks.

It should actually be 4 ships done. Corwin and Manning are also finished, but they disappeared without a trace when they were complete.

Unalga has been seperated. I have adjusted Number 1, but Number 2 is listed is 35% complete even though only 24 WR have been transcribed, so I will wait and see what is up with that. I will do the same for the Yukon when she gets split as well. She never got split before reaching VAL.

Far more that 24 WR have been transcribed for #2!
I think the 24 shown is since the split.
Arfon is still trying to sort things out.

This has just been fixed. It now correctly shows 4 voyages as being complete. Thanks Arfon!

The Jeanette has just reached VAL - the first ship in EIGHT MONTHS to do so - and has been removed. Thanks to Captain Craig and the crew!
*Sigh*... I really miss the old days, where we were completing ships every week (or even every day!)
