Congratulations to Hanibal for an excellent piece of guestimation. I asked my computer to download the latest database (actually a backup of yesterday's - that's the closest to the real thing the Zooniverse wizards will trust me with) and to count the weather observations. After a bit of mumbling to itself and counting on its fingers it decreed the number to be 1081641.

That's a LOT of weather - another awesome achievement.

Congratulations everybody!

We have transcribed 1 MILLION WR since July 2012!

Huzzah! Huzzah! Huzzah!

I love the thought of Zooniverse wizards - I have a mental picture of Terry Pratchett's wizards of the Unseen University in the Discworld novels.  Now they would definitely have computers which mumbled to themselves and counted on their fingers!

My picture was more 'lord of the rings'.  Do they have beards and wear cloaks.  I have always felt that computers and other hi-tech equipment require incantations and the occasional tribute of mars bars to keep them working well.

I'm thinking of tech-priests from the Warhammer 40.000 universe - creepy looking dudes, more machine than man, who keep the machine-spirits of their computers happy by praying to the Machine God (in Binary!), burning incense, writing runes and making regular offerings of root beer.

OK, I made that last one up, but the rest is all canon, and I can totally imagine these guys being behind the scenes at Zooniverse HQ:

Whoa! I'm happy to stay on the user end of Zooniverse!

If they were behind the transcribers we would have passed 1 million long ago :o :o :o

Hummm I wonder how fast THEY could transcribe ;)

Actually, tech-priests wouldn't need to transcribe.
They could simply connect themselves to a large database and read the log books, turning the weather data into bits and bytes just by thinking about it.
And since their bionic implants allow them to read much faster than normal humans, the priests could have the whole project done in a day or even an hour, depending on how many of them find Old Weather worthy of their attention.

But this is the 3rd millennium, not the 41st. So we must make do with what we have - ourselves.

Tired of having to update my guestimations entirely by hand, I wrote a Java program to do most of the work for me.
The program works perfectly - designing, building and testing it only took me about 80 minutes.
You can find it as an attachment in the first post of this topic. I've added a bunch of comments to make it easier to understand - send me a PM if you still can't figure it out.
In theory, it would be possible to make it even better by adding data scraping to the program, but that's too complicated for me.
Entering the numbers by hand doesn't take so long anyway.

On a completely unrelated topic, I also changed my avatar back. I was feeling nostalgic for Rainbow Dash, my favorite pony - especially after seeing her kick some butt in the latest comics. She's awesome!

When it comes to avatars, there's nothing better than a sky-blue pegasus with a rainbow mane and tail who can create giant tornados, fly up to ten times the speed of sound and win a death battle against an evil giant alien robot, right?

(Note: Google "Starscream VS Rainbow Dash" to view the death battle. I can't post the link because it's not family friendly.)

That's a good start, Hanibal. I seems your course is paying dividends.

Really cool - software and avatar both.  I like Rainbow Dash.  :)
