The link works for me - although the map doesn't show anything.
Do you get an error message?

Hi Elizabeth,

From time to time, when geonames.org goes under maintenance, all links goes to the center of London, with nothing else shown. Maybe this was the issue... actually the link seems to work for me as well, even if, as Randi pointed, the rock is not visible on google earth.

For some reason, the Thetis has discontinued Long/Lat readings even when at sea, so I am trying to include as many notes of location from the events page as possible.  This is made more difficult by the new log-keeper whose handwriting never seems to match my brain synapses.

So, could someone help me figure out this reading?  I think it is the same word in both places.

Mid to 8am

at 5.10am stood out of Port Simpson, Pilot conning.  at 7.35 stopped ship off Fort (?) ~ and sent an Officer on shore to learn the condition of affairs, everything being satisfactory, the ship proceeded at 7.45.  At end of watch standing out of ~ Passage.

Lucky for you I lived in the Yukon for many years. It's Tongass.

US                  , Tongass Narrows                    ,   55.32, -131.62, Alaska

There's also a Tongass Island, a Port Tongass Village, a Tongass National Forest, a Tongass Reef.....

I didn't find Fort Tongass, but it might be Port Tongass Village 54.75N 130.70W

thank you very much!  Don't know what the "Fort" or "Port" might be - not the P of this writer (see "Port Simpson" on the top line) but does not really strike me as a Fort either.

added after more research:
It is Fort Tongass - just over the border into Alaska!
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fort_Tongass

I will add that to the Alaskan place names thread.

Thanks kookaburra! Fort Tongass has been added to Alaskan place names

Sorry, I wanted to look further, but I was called away, and didn't have time to look in Wiki. (I usually start with Mapcarta because they have locations nearby, other names etc.  I can zoom and move around the map and often recognise the word I'm looking for, except that I've been deceived by hard to read handwriting.)  I also note that:
Tongass Passage Coordinates: 54?44′39″N 130?38′10″W is not to be confused with Tongass Narrows.

In decimal notation that's: 54.7442n 130.6361w

This is exactly what I need, Randi, but the link says "No ebook available" and only gives me an option to "Get Print Book" - am I missing something?

I'm sorry, but this is just a link Janet gave me.

Try: St. Lawrence pilot : Gulf and River St. Lawrence to Montreal - http://babel.hathitrust.org/cgi/pt?id=umn.31951002354194n;view=1up;seq=5

Very strange - must be the difference between US and European Google Books.  I tested the link just now, and I got "eBook Free".  Sigh, sorry it doesn't stay consistent globally.
