Cape Novosilski (Primorskiy) - See Mys Novosil'skogo

There seems to be another Cape Novosilski. Or they confused the name :-\

Porobably they mean Mys Novosil'skogo which is another name for Mys Krigugon also known as South Head (their 8pm location).

Definitely so. Added aliases to Mys Krugugon to map, ref & csv. Thanks Randi!

I'm not sure how many alternate names you want to include...

Cape Serdze is Mys Serdtse-Kamen'
and
Cape Unikin is Mys Unikyn

Alias added to map, ref & csv. Thanks Randi!

So funny - I just spent the last half hour trying to work out what Cape poorly-written-something-ikin was :D  Just worked out it was Cape Unikin aka Mys Unikyn. I tracked it via Matteo's brilliant google map :D

Another sign of OW addiction then  :D

Whaler California 1893 Log

On April 29 she notes  Mys Opukinskiy as Cape Omikinsky (https://www.zooniverse.org/projects/zooniverse/old-weather/talk/subjects/9635150)

From William Baylies 1899 ~ May 15

Blubber Bay
Couldn't find it, based on the log it appears to be somewhere between Indian point and John Howland Bay

Cape Behring
Possibly refers to this:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cape_Bering
With the Russian version of the article giving the Coordinates as
64.957  -175.8568
Not sure if this is the same one referred to in the log, it seems slightly out from where I thought the ship was, but it isn't too far from where it should be

Here's that May 15th Page from Wm Baylies 1899:

https://panoptes-uploads.zooniverse.org/production/subject_location/280a08d6-e464-46b0-ba6e-c80432026fcc.jpeg

There is certainly a Bay between those two points:

Bukhta Tkachen
Бухта Ткачен,特卡臣湾
4031484
H BAY bay
Russia RU ? Chukotka 15
64.47403, -172.81704

but I can't link up the name Blubber Bay - very frustrating :-/

For context, the following page is the one mentioning Cape Behring (May 18)

The coordinates I gave is the closest I could find, but I'm not sure if its the right place

This one (Cape Bering; Mys Beringa) was like pulling teeth - finally got it through a google translated page from Wikipaedia Russia:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cape_Bering

'This article may be expanded with text translated from the corresponding article in Russian. (March 2017) Click [show] for important '
On the Wiki page click 'corresponding article', then ask google to translate. Here's an image of the page...

It all makes sense- they are 'patrolling' the southern Chukchi peninsula in the hope of finding whales. Still cannot track Blubber Bay. Though I did find an interesting mention that the people of St Lawrence Island (not far away at all) practiced a peculiar act of beating blubber to remove the oil, then using the remaining fibres/flesh for fabric. Sounds very water-proof, but don't go standing upwind of any polar bears.  :o

http://www.geonames.org/4031768/mys-beringa.html
65.00129, -175.88523

Interesting difference, because the page https://ru.wikipedia.org/wiki/%D0%9C%D1%8B%D1%81_%D0%91%D0%B5%D1%80%D0%B8%D0%BD%D0%B3%D0%B0 shows 65 00 01, 175 53 26 that converts to: 65.00028, 175.8906. That isn't an exact match, but it is closer.
(and https://ru.wikipedia.org/wiki/%D0%9C%D1%8B%D1%81_%D0%91%D0%B5%D1%80%D0%B8%D0%BD%D0%B3%D0%B0#/maplink/1 has still a slightly different value ::))

And that matches what I had found on an old map (when I was really looking for Blubber Bay ::)): http://www.davidrumsey.com/luna/servlet/detail/RUMSEY~8~1~31452~1150408

I should have looked further up this thread list shouldn't I? - I'm a twit.

At one point I found that the Cape Behring Lat and Long were those of Enmelen settlement.  :-\

Just for the fun of it:
At latitude 65.0 degrees one degree of longitude is 47175.51 metres, 175.8568-175.88523=0.02843 x 47175.51 = 1341.20 metres difference. :)

Feedback from an expert:
...
Hmmm. Whale blubber in russian it's "ворвань" (old variant) or just "тюлений/китовый жир" (seals / whale fat). To be honest I cant imagine bay with such name :) And I cant find something with similar name all around Chukchi Peninsula.
Then I've thought "maybe blubber must be in Chukchi language?" and found some russian-chukchi translators.

https://screenshots.firefox.com/PRL7nXmjbBzRwMYj/charles.weinstein.free.fr
from there:
http://charles.weinstein.free.fr/chukches/LEX/LxT-Tajnat_aliment.html

But... Cant find something with words Ивын (iwun) or ивив (iwiw).
I'm give up, sorry.

Big thanks to d0cent!

d0cent's comment about that being an unlikely name for a bay reminded me of something I had found, and ignored, earlier: https://books.google.com/books?id=2VgLAQAAIAAJ&pg=PA113&lpg=PA113&dq=blubber+bay,+russia+dutchman
I find this a little cryptic, but when I looked up Plover Bay in Matteo's list, I discovered that an alternate name is Plubber Bay.
