Greenlandic Place Names -- Discussion
« on: March 16, 2013, 12:47:42 pm »
In general, if you are looking for place names or for maps and other useful references, you should go to Greenlandic Place Names -- Reference.

You can use this topic to search for information that has not yet been added to the Reference topic.

You can also use this topic to ask for help with reading a Greenlandic place name or locating the place.
Give us a link to the log page(s) where it is mentioned and tell us approximately where it occurs on the page(s).

Note: Place names include lighthouses.

If you have information about a place name or find a useful reference, please help everyone by contributing it to this topic.

When contributing place names, try to provide as many of the following as possible:
  • Name in log
  • Latitude and Longitude (preferably in decimal format with a minimum of one decimal place - two decimal places is the preferred format)
  • Province
  • Current name (if different)
  • Link to more information
  • Also, in case of problems, a link to the log page(s) where it is mentioned would be helpful
Don't worry if you can't supply all the information. Your link to the page will enable others to search for the missing information.
(You can save us even more work by using the template provided, but that is strictly optional.)

A real bumper crop of "where's that?!" on the USCGS Northland. First name(s) quoted are from the logs, final name is the modern/geonames version.

Julianehaab = modern Qaqortoq: http://www.geonames.org/6295699/julianehaab.html

Igaliko Fjord = Agaliko Fjord = Igaliku Fjord: http://www.geonames.org/3423391/igaliku-fjord.html

Julianehaab Fjord: http://www.geonames.org/3422750/julianehabsfjord.html

Pardtlet Island = Paarliit Island (and various other spellings listed on Geonames) http://www.geonames.org/3421191/paarliit.html

Kong Oscars Havn = Kong Oscar Havn: http://www.geonames.org/3422316/kong-oscar-havn.html

Existing entry Tasiilaq was formerly called Angmagssalik

(Cape) Orsuluviak = Qasigissat: http://www.geonames.org/3420757/qasigissat.html

Torgilsbu - a more difficult one! A fishing and weather station that closed in 1940/41. I eventually came across the Greenland Pilot, which gives 60 33 N 43 13 W (p19: link). I also came across a Norwegian report from an expedition that spent time in the area (link). The map on p415 gives the same location; there's also a photo on p419.

However, the name is also quoted elsewhere as later being a US radio and weather station with codename "Bluie East 1" (e.g. link), but this corresponds to Prince Christian Sound, 30 miles south. I suspect that the name was "transferred" - it's a very remote location with few villages to name a radio station after! Also, note the link given above includes coordinates for all "Bluie" codenames, which I suspect are worth adding (we have a couple already).

Arsuk Island: http://www.geonames.org/3424450/arsuutaa.html

Torsukatak Fjord = Torssukatak = Torsukattak: http://www.geonames.org/3419237/torsukattak.html

Ekaluit Bay = Ekaluit Fjord = Kungnait Bay = Eqaluit: http://www.geonames.org/3423922/eqaluit.html

Umanak Island (Arsuk) = Arsuup Uummannaa: http://www.geonames.org/3424449/arsuup-uummannaa.html (note this is a different Umanak to those below, and many others exist)

Jacobshavn = Jakobshavn = Ilulissat: http://www.geonames.org/3423146/ilulissat.html

Vaigat Channel = Vaigat = The Vaigat = Vaigat Strait (the crew have no idea what to call it): http://www.geonames.org/3418818/vaigat.html

Existing Disko entries also sometimes spelt Disco.

Hare Island: http://www.geonames.org/3423559/hareo.html

Nugsuak Halvo: Not entirely sure. "Halvo" is Danish for "Peninsula", and Geonames redirects me to the Nuussuaq peninsula (http://www.geonames.org/3421301/nuussuaq.html), which would fit the ship's location, but the name is a bit different.

Umanak Fjord = Uminak Fjord = Uummannaq Fjord: http://www.geonames.org/3418843/uummannaq-fjord.html

Karajak Fjord/Glacier = Qarajaq Glacier: http://www.geonames.org/3420818/qarajaq-isfjord.html

Umanak = Uummannaq: http://www.geonames.org/3426193/uummannaq.html

Nugatsiak = Nuugaatsiaq: http://www.geonames.org/3421327/nuugaatsiaq.html

Karrats Fjord = Karrat Fjord: http://www.geonames.org/3422503/karrat-fjord.html

Kekertarsuak = Qeqertarsuaq: http://www.geonames.org/3420644/qeqertarsuaq.html

Svartenhuks Halvo = Svartenhuk: http://www.geonames.org/3419543/svartenhuk.html

Torve Island = Avalleq: http://www.geonames.org/3424370/avalleq.html

Proven Island = Kangerssuatsiaq: http://www.geonames.org/3422592/kangerssuatsiaq.html

Singarnak Island = Singarnaq: http://www.geonames.org/3419869/singarnaq.html

Kangek Island: The ship was maneuvering between "Kangek Island and Singarnak Island", but the only location I find with "Kangek" is a nearby peninsula (http://www.geonames.org/3422666/kangeq.html). Not sure which island they mean.

Kaersorsuak Cape: Refers to Qaersok Cape (http://www.geonames.org/3420934/qaersoq.html) on Qaarsorsuak Island (http://www.geonames.org/3420948/qaarsorsuaq.html)

Upernivik = Upernavik: http://www.geonames.org/3418911/upernavik.html (both island and settlement)

Kingigtanguak Island = Kingittuarsuk? http://www.geonames.org/3422404/kingittuarsuk.html or Kanginguaq? http://www.geonames.org/3422545/kanginguaq.html

The Deadhs? Fjord = De Dodes Fjord = http://www.geonames.org/3831461/de-dodes-fjord.html Spelling is difficult to make out, see 1600-1800: log page

Susanneoer = Susanne Islands: http://www.geonames.org/3419553/susanneoer.html

Egedesminde = Aasiaat: http://www.geonames.org/3424903/aasiaat.html

Vester Ejland: http://www.geonames.org/3418788/vester-ejland.html

Holsteinborg = Sisimiut: http://www.geonames.org/3419842/sisimiut.html

It is! It seems the ship was employed resupplying villages in Greenland whilst Denmark was unable to do so, and hence managed to get everywhere.

Fantastic job!

I think you've got it Randi - that matches it being the last island they pass to port before turning South.
