Was asked to help find this one by PM:

Help! If you can the ship is some where in Oregon but can not read the location http://oldweather.s3.amazonaws.com/ow3/final/Commodore%20perry//Volumes/Seagate%20Backup%20Plus%20Drive/Arfon-JPEGS/RG26/COMMODORE%20PERRY//vol180/vol180_082_1.jpg

I'm glad google suggests substitutes - search for "Cors Bay" from 8am note gave me Coos Bay.  It's not in US (non-Alaskan) Place Names so I will add it to the discussion.  google maps show it to have a narrow very twisty entrance and is very long, I'm not sure at what part to take the lat/long.  By Coos Bay City just off shore from their Historical Maritime Center is 43.375459, -124.211206

Both Coos Bay and Coos Bay (town) added to map,ref & csv. Thanks Janet

Lighthouses on that page:

Heceta Head - http://www.lighthousefriends.com/light.asp?ID=131 & http://www.unc.edu/~rowlett/lighthouse/or.htm
and
Umpqua River - http://www.lighthousefriends.com/light.asp?ID=130 & http://www.unc.edu/~rowlett/lighthouse/or.htm

Heceta Head was already in the list, added lighthousefriends link.
Umpqua river and lighthouse added to map,ref & csv. Thanks Randi

I generally am using ArcGIS map to find place names. It usually comes up trumps. It will suggest possibilities as a drop down list from the search box, and gives the region (eg Oregon, Alaska) too, to help you choose. Of course this works best if you can read the first few letters of the place!  ::)
It is good for coastal features, small islands, heads etc if you zoom in far enough on the map, although this can be tedious!

:) Not the basic search and zoom that I mentioned. Maybe for advanced features...

Glad you like it  :)
Just in case yet another tool might be useful  - http://www.geonames.org/
More useful for those tricky/obscure cases as it's a bit less smooth to use. Will search for historical names, spelling variants etc., as well as current accepted names. The downside is it can come up with a l-o-n-g list unless you specify the country in the RH box, and possibly use... the advanced search link, (underneath the main page search box). This can be used to specify the feature class (city, river, hill, undersea etc) to narrow it further, and has a fuzzy search option if the spelling is doubtful. Clicking the place name takes you to a map, again this is a bit more elaborate than we need, I just click on 'layers' and uncheck the 'geonames' box to clear the clutter of labels. Choose satellite or map view on the top R side.
Also free! I use these for one of my dayjob roles - transcribing/databasing herbarium (pressed plant collection) labels - we can't spare the money either!  ;D
