OW Speaker's Bureau - Have PowerPoint, will Travel
« on: March 18, 2013, 08:22:11 am »
OK, I've created http://blog.oldweather.org/resources/.

I see this as being useful not just to us, but to anyone who wants to talk or speak about the project. To this end I'd like to restrict it to material that we are happy (and allowed) to let other people use without asking for specific permission.

Any suggestions welcome. I'd like to add links to a few (say 6) interesting log pages (from the US project, to avoid thorny copyright questions). Any other cool images?

Kevin, Joan, Dean (and others). If you have a presentation or poster that you are willing to share on this basis, please send it to me (or point me at the link) and I'll add it in.

My offer of a talk about Old Weather has gone down well with the History of Science Museum in Oxford. Dean and I have been in touch - I know he's working on a talk too. I'll be nicking anything that seems useful!
Maikel has helped already. He reminded me to keep the focus on the crowd-sourcing side of things emphasizing how useful we are to various projects, and how much fun it is.
I've already thought of a few things to put in the talk...some of Philip's talk that he gave last year, the sound of creaking ice. Some words from the OW addiction thread. Some funnies from the logs, some serious from the logs, a trail of what happens to the details that we put in, right round to BOINC (though as Maikel says it's not helpful that there is little going there just now).
I also get a desk with a computer to use to demonstrate what happens...and they are looking for something interactive if possible. Any ideas?
I thought a title like 'Crowd sourcing your climate  - ship ahoy!' Might be enticing enough - but anything grabbing would be welcome - I think they need the title today.
TIA!
Joan

Hi Joan,
I think the title you chose for your presentation is very nice, recalling the presence of Royal Navy ships in Old Weather project.

As regards something interactive, and not knowing what type of interaction will be available, I would like to recall that a lot of interaction within us Old Weather transcribers has to deal with interpretation of handwritings.

I do not know if it will be possible to have some of the people attending your presentation to interact with some of the most difficult handwritings like the one of HMS Carnarvon Navigating Officer in 1913 :)

Here is a sample page:

Perhaps you could show a log page from a hurricane and put in a bit of the historical stuff - e.g. Halifax fire, Jutland, Falklands and point out that during the battle the temperatures and wind direction are recorded and immediately afterwards, during the clearing up, pressure readings resume.

Maybe a page from one of the arctic ships showing the conditions that those sailors endured might go down well.

Can you nick one or two of the animations from the blogs, that fog of uncertainty one is illustrative, and point out that that one was early in the project.

Stress that this data will be available for the foreseeable future, worldwide and can be used for climate modelling and, in some cases (probably ports), extra data for the study of local weather trends.

Have fun and enjoy the day

Thank you so much Sylvia - this is certainly the sort of thing that I need to illustrate why computers can't do the job! What terrible writing! Thank you again.

one idea I have is to get a couple of small jigsaws and put weather codes in bad writing on the back of the pieces. Then I'll make up a page of weather - and if they get it right they should be able to put the jigsaw together 'from the back' then turn it over to reveal the correct picture.   I'm trying to think of anything to do with ice...but drawing a blank so far.

Thanks for all these ideas - especially that the details will be around for a long time. I must also remember to say that someone is studying us and how we do the work.
Thanks again,
Joan

I don't know if it is what you are looking for, but here are two ice-related blogs:

There was this fun thing put together by Philip some time ago:
http://old.oldweather.org/voyages?ship=Danae
They can pick any ship they lilke.

Also, all scans for the RN ships can be found at
http://old.oldweather.org/vessels?status=all

And the voyage of the Rodgers scans are all at  http://www.oldweather.org/ships/500dc366cd0db40002000f5d
and for Rush at http://www.oldweather.org/ships/500dc361cd0db400020001b3

Some very interesting pages of sea ice can be pulled from the Jeanette's discussion pages.  Those days when they were rushing to build braces to keep the hull from collapsing come to mind.

Also let them look at several entries from Contest - Least Readable Handwriting topic. ;D

There is a marvellous descriptioon of the sea ice breaking up just before the Jeannette capsizes. The whole floe in which the vessel is stuck is moving SW towards the newly discovered Jeannette Island and being broken by it. If the island hadn't been there it is possible the ship might have remained afloat and made it to port. If you are interested in this I'll give you the link, Joan. You may have enough material already, though.

I knew there was a reason for keeping all that fun stuff around when we purged the forum before Phase 3! ;D
