How long is your presentation, Joan? It sounds like you already have enough to keep them entertained for at least an hour.
that's a good point Craig - about 20 minutes!
My system will be to:
spend 2 minutes explaining Zooniverse and how the citizen scientist helps the academic world (so I'll quickly mention the galaxy counters, Serengeti, and a couple more) on one slide to show what's going on.
Then I'll focus in on Old Weather and explain that it provides both climate and history information as well as a great deal of entertainment for us. I will show those elements on one slide, then focus in on collecting weather data -how it works (2 out of 3 agree on each piece of weather detail), where it goes to (back through Philip), mentioning BOINC for processing the mass of data that we have provided. Then I'll go back to what we are collecting - weather, natural phenomena (a chance to mention the other zooniverses that have used our info - and the solar scientists now after the aurora stuff), ice (I'll certainly include that creaky ice blog along with the story of the holed Jeanette). The I'll do a history thread, dragging in some of the funnier and more poignant bits from the logs. I'll also mention that we are also being studied by someone - and I'll use some of OW addiction thread for that.. Other things suggested here will be very useful for the desk area that I get later in the afternoon...lots of stories - I'll have a daring-do page, milk in the Pearl River and other lost overboards page, a few mondegreens etc . I'll also print up a large A) sized chart of how we fit into Zooniverse, and all of our 'spin-offs' (weather, nat phenom, solar info, history etc etc).
And I'm going to print out some wee business cards with the oW logo on so that those interested to join in don't have to go searching around for it. If I can get on with it quickly this weekend I'll put all the stuff up on oW for comments.
