Just for fun - unscramble the Pandora
« on: March 30, 2013, 03:42:30 pm »
Hi all,
I was looking for info on holystoning to go with an example of checking info with the forum, when I came across a great picture of the crew of the Pandora (ring a bell? - an older Pandora was re-named the Jeannette as she was sold to America - it's a small world or what??! ). At which point the computer went slow - so I closed her down and re-opened...and looked up the picture only to find that it was a 'jigsaw' picture - so have a bash and have fun!

(then I had to start again to find a picture of the same less 'owned' - sigh) ;D

I loved that puzzle - every time you click "Puzzle" you get another random picture.  :)

I emailed you the DANFS links for this holystoning pic - gov't photo copyright free.

For everyone, any time you have need of copyright-free images for this project, there are several gov't sites where everything is copyright free.  There may be better pictures elsewhere, if you are only looking for private use.

US Navy History & Heritage Command, Online Library of Selected Images:
http://www.history.navy.mil/branches/org11-2.htm

US Coast Guard and Revenue Cutter Images:
http://www.uscg.mil/history/webcutters/USRC_Photo_Index.asp and
http://www.uscg.mil/history/CG_Photo_Index.asp

US NOAA Photo Library
http://www.photolib.noaa.gov/ships/index.html#album

They all have search functions.

The US Library of Congress is also a very rich site, but more care must be made in checking copyright.  Everything they own is copyright free, but they also act as a bulletin board giving everyone access to some private and university online collections, such as The Chicago History Museum.  The combined collection is immense.

Other digital collections (same mixed copyright issue) are found at

That's it.
I gave the link to the puzzle which obviously isn't fixed!
