I'm having trouble with this guy's name and rank...I see the "Chief Engineer," but the rest is a bit fuzzy.

Good work, Kevin! ;D

Welcome to the OW family Chocoholic_Jedi!
When you ask about a page it is helpful if you include a link to the page in question (See: http://forum.oldweather.org/index.php?topic=1073.0), because the context is often helpful.

For example ;)

Okay, I've got another one! It's a ship name; I've tried searching for it but have come up empty.

It's in the middle of the Meridian to 4 PM entry.

Thanks again!

Hi, Jedi.

First, the best encyclopedia for USN ships is in their Naval History and Heritage Command DANFS:

The only 4-letter 'F' ship I could find shaped like that is "Fern"; this year, it would be Fern II:
Quote
http://www.history.navy.mil/danfs/f2/fern-ii.htm
... transferred to the Navy from the Treasury Department 30 January 1891; and commissioned 22 April 1891, Lieutenant Commander A. J. Iverson in command.
Fern sailed the east coast, carrying coal and general cargo to various bases, locating and destroying by gunfire wrecks of ships obstructing navigation, and assisting in the precommissioning trials of new ships. After 22 January 1898 she was based at Key West ...
Her history as a Revenue Cutter can be found in the Coast Guard's ship index: http://www.uscg.mil/history/webcutters/CUTTERLIST.asp
http://www.uscg.mil/history/webcutters/Fern_1871.pdf

Second, I don't know if you are in a location where you might meet the Fern.  There is a simple way to get the jpg link to any page you are transcribing and paste it in a forum post; you do not need to create a new url.

The advantage to this is that we can cheat, and walk our way up and down the logbook pages to look for other clues that will help us read various scribbles.

Hi Chocoholic_Jedi,

As Janet says, the actual link is more helpful - and easier!

Here is how to walk through the pages: http://forum.oldweather.org/index.php?topic=3489.msg62863#msg62863

That's really helpful, thanks! Great job to whoever created the naming system for these pages. Sorry for the dumb questions, I'm still learning about all the resources.

Also, here's the page using the actual link: https://oldweather.s3.amazonaws.com/ow3/final/USS%20Concord/vol015of040/vol015of040_010_1.jpg

Concord's in Virginia, so the information about the Fern that Janet provided seems to match.

Thanks again everyone!

Hi Chocoholic_ Jedi - I have a mental picture of you in the Obi Wan-Kanobi gear bearing a vast white-chocolate Cadbury's finger biscuit instead of a light sabre. There are 3 biscuits left in the tin - so - may the fourth be with you.  ::)
Anyway - after that terrible joke (please excuse it), just to say that there's a useful file: http://forum.oldweather.org/index.php?topic=3329.0   at

    Old Weather Forum ?
Home Port: Welcome to Old Weather ?
    Getting Your Sea Legs
**File index etc

that lists all the folders, so if you're not sure where to find 'handwriting help' nip back to that list and use the link there to whizz straight to your desired folder.
Best wishes,
Joan

Haha! I'll take it; not a bad joke at all.  :)

Thanks, that's a great link to have.
