PS - Please also note any sources that you have found useful in tracking down Baltic places and lighthouses - in Other.

And, any general sources not already included in the Welcome topic - here.

I find http://geonames.nga.mil/ggmagaz/ (National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency - GeoNames Search) VERY handy for tracking down names and for finding the variants.

That's really neat Stuart!

I'm copying it to the Alaskan Place Names -- Discussion topic.

Japan Inland Sea
« Reply #37 on: January 10, 2014, 09:13:37 pm »
Is there an OW source for finding names of places in the Inland Sea of Japan? HMS Cairo mentions lots of islands and lighthouses going by, but most of them come up empty on a straight Google search. I see lots of help for the China coast and Yangtze, but almost nothing for Japan beyond the main cities.

Cairo must have been logging only the tiniest islands because none or these are detailed enough to show anything in her log. It's only one day in question. I can just guess. Thanks.

Post the names and the information you have in China Station, Japan, Pacific and Indian Ocean

Maybe someone can help or maybe the info you do have will help someone else.

There are a lot of nutcases dedicated transcribers who might be willing to search ;)

P.S. Just remembered these - they are modern but the details may help:

Randi just showed what I was looking for:  Overview for choosing a nautical chart of Japan is

I believe these are released by the US Navy.

 ;D
Went to that page and searched on Japan ;)
Also included Pilot books in the list (last two). They are often handy for really obscure info.
Silvia & Janet found these!

Have a look at http://forum.oldweather.org/index.php?topic=3637.msg63490#msg63490 for general sources for lighthouse and place names.
