We need to grow.
To do that we must be able to confirm newbies' confidence in their work in order to keep them.  To do that we need to be able access the recorded page logs of newbies if they want help and/or we want to check them. Each page a newbie does has to be accessible by another group of checkers. Whether that is set centrally, or the newbie can mark a page as 'please check' so that someone else can get to it, is up to the good Arfon and team to manufacture. Finer details can be debated. But I am SURE that this is the way forward.  This feature has to be independent of joining the forum, but no reason why we can't encourage people to join during that exercise.

And me!

I stopped working on Planet Hunters because I started to think I didn't know what I was doing. There may have been help in their forum but I didn't really go looking. It did mean that I eventually tried something else and ended up here, so it all worked out OK in the end  ;D

On a more general note...

I would like some feedback on how Philip's data processing is going. We have had some very creative log keepers and transcribers ;) If we know what is working well and what is causing problems, we can improve our transcribing.

Also (as studentforever noted), I would like to know who is using our data - weather, history, aurorae, etc.

Thanks!

If they want to, the can and will - especially if there's a place name that has their checker sending them to Geo Help, or something.  If they don't want to, we want to help without driving them off.

Oh how I love this place and all of you
Without this place what would I do?
Evict the dust from my once-polished wood?
Convert from stir-fry to slow-cook food?
This is the place where I come to have fun.
Forget the rain outside - in here there's always sun.

Slightly left field on progress report.
It seems we need a lot more transcribers for the number of logs we have.
I put forward this suggestion.

Based on an accuracy of 2 out of 3 correct entries,  can the logs be compared after two lots on entries and if they match then mark those pages as being done. The would be third transcriber then gets a new page.
That way most (that is a guess) pages should be done in two passes and we save 33% data entry and hence more logs get done.
Obviously 2 miss matches go through for a third.

Good thought, Stuart. Does the software take into account the error record of each transcriber? Perhaps we are given reliability scores such that the 2 out of 3 rule may not always apply. It's worth proposing to Philip, in any case.

A blog/post on how the data is processed from transcriber entry to Philip's output would be very helpful.

In addition to simple curiosity, the better we understand the system the better we can use it and make useful and practical suggestions.

I've put a certain amount of effort into sorting out noon positions where they are wrong or missing. I would be prepared to put them into a spreadsheet if this would help Phillip and crew to 'rescue' the weather data.  There are some quite long spells with no usable lat, long on some voyages and it seems a waste of data if I can help to put it into the database.  I'm sure other people have put a similar amount of effort in as well - if he talks to me nicely I might even go through some voyages where someone hasn't filled in the data and sort those out as well if I don't have to do it against the clock.
