People: Name information sources
« on: July 19, 2013, 03:29:05 pm »
Registers of the Commissioned Officers of the United States Navy
and Marine Corps
1775-1970

http://www.ibiblio.org/hyperwar/AMH/USN/Naval_Registers/
Complete list (a bit cryptic)

I tried 1802, 1851, and 1896 - they are NOT searchable.
I tried 1900, 1920, and 1950 - they ARE searchable (you may need to use Adobe Reader).
The search feature is not entirely reliable. In 1908 and 1916 it did NOT find all instances of "Albatross". To find the remaining boatswains I looked under boatswains.

In at least some cases it gives the ship the person was serving on.

Janet - feel free to move/rename/whatever ;)

EVERYONE: Please add any sources that you have for people's names that are not already in Helpful Links to Outside Information.

We have lots of excellent references, but they tend to be only at the point where the question was asked.

Randi, I inserted that index in the Officers and Personnel section of Helpful Links.  If you know the exact year, it might be very helpful.

Found it by chance after spending several hours trying to track down some names.
Dad wondered what I was yelling about ;)

I would have never gotten this name without it!

No ;D
I would never have deciphered it, but once I found it I could see it (more or less).

Metters does the same thing with his signature that our new secretary of the treasury does with his - make a formally consistent scribble that no forger could guess at if trying to write out a stolen blank check.  When Jack Lew was nominated, his signature that would appear on all paper money got lots of news coverage

Possible:

Before being confirmed he promised to change it for the dollar bill signature:

FWMetters / Fwmetters

I actually suspected the F and W, but I didn't realize they were initials.
