Patrick Welsh (Qr Mr)? departed? ..
« on: August 18, 2014, 08:04:59 pm »
Hi there,

Just started transcribing and could use some help with the following page; http://oldweather.s3.amazonaws.com/ow3/final/USS%20Thetis/vol005of024/vol005_171_1.jpg

I had some trouble with these sentences:
"Clear cool + pleasant. ~~u~~e breeze to light airs from West."
and
"Patrick Welsh (Qr Mr.)? ... on? ... of his term of enlistment."

I think it should be "Patrick Welsh (Qr Mr.) departed on fruition of his term of enlistment" but I'm not sure.

Thank you :)
Roan

Welcome to OW and to the forum family!

Probably:
"Clear cool + pleasant. Gentle breeze to light airs from West."
and
"Patrick Welsh (Qr Mr.) reported expiration of his term of enlistment."

You will quickly get used to the vocabulary ;)
the writing may take a bit longer ::)

Probably:
"Clear cool + pleasant. Gentle breeze to light airs from West."

Said it before I could ;) The various logbook instructions list the various descriptive terms for the weather that are officially sanctioned, which can be helpful in deciphering those.

Assuming the Patrick Welsh entry is the one in 8am to merid (it's often helpful to include where on a logpage you're looking):
"Patrick Welsh (Qr. Mr.) reported expiration of his term of enlistment"

Also, you should avoid using question marks unless they're actually there - although I note you used ~ in the first sentence, so perhaps you already know.

Edit: Randi edited before I could get the second bit too!

(I've never seen someone report expiration of enlistment before - is that a normal thing to do?)

Perhaps the reason I don't see my crew's enlistment expiring is the fact that they all keep jumping ship...

That does make sense now, thanks alot Randi and Danny252! :D
Is it ok to transcribe the whole page? I know its not necessary, but it does help me to get used to the handwriting and such.

No problem with that at all as far as I'm aware - I quite enjoy doing it!

Also, have you found the Thetis reference and transcription examples yet? Those, and the other threads on the Thetis, are bound to be helpful.
