Is "The Captain" a person?
« on: September 25, 2014, 03:45:30 pm »
I'm mainly paging the naval-history.net lot here, regarding mentions of people.

Quite often, there are references to "The Captain", "The Commanding Officer", "The Surgeon", and so on. Would you like these to be recorded as Mentions of people with the name "The Captain", the same as if it was "Captain Foobar" or "Dr Baz, Surgeon"? Obviously I can't go around writing in the person's name myself! The simplest alternative method is to just dump it in an Event.

As I understand it, to point of mentioning people is to make proper names more easily found.  So, remarks about "the Captain" would not be a name mention.

I think you may be the first to ask that question.  :)

I agree for the most part. The problem comes in the case where the log records important events such as "The surgeon left the ship for duty at Mare Island", which is a pretty important bit of data for someone trying to put together the Surgeon Baz's career path!

However, I'd imagine that as long as the text is recorded somehow, it's all displayed pretty similarly to the NavalHistory editors (or anyone else using the data).

TWYS. We have the transcriptions and log page scans to refer to, and generally we check every scan.
We add names or other information as we consider necessary.
Added information appears in italic to differentiate it from the log entries.
Ta.  :)
