Hello from a new Zooniverse staff guy!
« on: October 09, 2014, 07:28:10 pm »
Hello, Zooites of Old Weather!

My name is Darren--DZM here on the Old Weather forum--and I've just joined the Zooniverse team. I'm working on several projects here at Zooniverse HQ, but one of my key roles will be staying around these boards as often as possible, looking for any ways in which I can help out. So I?m always interested in hearing from you--questions, concerns, ideas, anything!

I don't have any professional background in climatology or history, but I'm excited to learn more from all of you who have been doing this Old Weather thing for a while now! It's awesome to see that the project has been so successful, and I hope that I can do my part to make sure that it remains so!

Anyway, I'll be poking around the forums... If there?s anything that you think the new guy should know right off the bat, please share, and feel free to ask anything about me as well.

See you around!  :)

DZM

Hi, Darren, welcome to the OW forum.  Glad to hear from one of the PTB here.

The public boards here cover our transcription efforts.  The editors of the ship histories have their own hidden board, to avoid confusing newbie transcribers with contradictory instructions.  If you want to see the results of our history editors, look at the ships listed on Gordon Smith's history site http://naval-history.net/

Royal Navy WW1 ships here: http://naval-history.net/OWShips-LogBooksWW1.htm
American Navy, Coast Guard and Coast Survey (NOAA) ships here:  http://naval-history.net/OW-US/USAShipsIndex.htm

If you want to see our hardworking side, look at the boards under Questions and Answers and Library

If you want to see our fun side, look at Dockside Cafe

Thank you, Janet! I like you already--you seem nice, and your username has my favorite animal! (Although I'm guessing that for you it's a three-syllable pronunciation?  ;D )

Wow, a person could get lost for days reading these transcribed logs, especially if they're interested in maritime history. What an impressive collection! Where should I begin? Also, should I pay attention to that other forum as well?

How about if I wanted to try my hand at contributing, so that I understand the project a little better? The only barrier is that I'm sadly miserable at interpreting cursive, let alone the scrawl that a lot of sailors use.  :o

In any case, thank you for the welcome!

EDIT: Oh, hello to you too, Randi. Thank you very much! I'll have a look!

Hello, Caro! I have a question for all you experienced folk already... how did you get your avatars working? When I try to upload one, I get this:

An Error Has Occurred! The attachments upload directory is not writable. Your attachment or avatar cannot be saved.

I feel so naked without a proper avatar! Any advice?

Allegedly, you can add an avatar for all the project forums through your Zooniverse account (account settings).
Go to https://www.zooniverse.org/account/settings and log in if necessary.
Some people have reported trouble doing this lately, so good luck.  ;)

That works for the Talk forums, but this one is still separate from those... Anything that I upload to the Zooniverse can't possible affect my avatar settings on this completely separate forum, right? Or am I missing something? I hope I'm missing something! :-)

As I say, there have been problems reported.
We can't upload an avatar from this forum, that's for sure.

You might want to give Jamestown (1879) a try.

I would suggest starting with the Tutorial,
then Guides for US logs: drawing entry boxes, transcribing and editing,
then Jamestown -- Reference: Transcription Example and Log Description and Jamestown (1879) -- Discussion: Questions and Comments

And, have a look at Bet you didn't know there was a term for it! ;D

Maybe this post from Randi will help:

That worked! I just uploaded my avatar to a file-hosting site and used the URL.

Thank you all for being so helpful! Anything I can do in return?
