Ship's name help please
« on: November 21, 2014, 04:03:47 pm »
Hi folks,
Please can anyone help with the name of the USS ?G~~~~ at 3&4 pm on this page:
http://oldweather.s3.amazonaws.com/ow3/final/USCS%20Patterson/Book%206/IMG_5522_1.jpg

I've looked through a few of the lists of ships on our help site but none seem to fit the bill. Almost looks like Gophers.
Thank you,
Joan

How about "Explorer"?  Would be misnamed USS when it was USC&GS at that time

Thanks Kookaburra! I somehow missed the top loop of that first letter and thought it was a 'G' - actually by reducing the magnification I can see exactly what you spotted. Bit worried by what appears to be an 's' at the end - but this person has done that before - added and 's' to words.
Thanks again,
Joan

That's right, it is the only ship in DANFS under the name Explorer.  NavSource won't let me in on that page (they probably have more material than DANFS) but there is this until they come back online: http://www.history.navy.mil/danfs/e6/explorer.htm

Thanks Janet,
I did find some other reference to it implying that she'd had a bit of a prang in 1911, so perhaps that's why she's near or in Moran's Shipyard. Ending up inheriting the frequently broken-down Reynard does not bode well.  ::)

I would never rely on the logkeepers to be bothered with quite which acronym is appropriate!

Janet says:
Quote
In time of war, the entire Coast Guard gets removed from the Treasury Department and gets given to the Secretary of the Navy by presidential decree.  It gives the Navy control of all US ships, even when they do nothing but Coast Guard work.  At that point, all Coast Guard vessels are legally Navy ships and carry the USS prefix.  They switch back to being cutters when the president removes them from naval control.

That may be what you are seeing :-\

Good point - they even spell their colleagues names differently from post to post, so remembering all the ship's designations when they apparently change regularly would be asking too much.  I wonder if the name (and call number) gets repainted during those short stints in the Navy?

I don't think the US was busy beating anyone up in 1911, and you're possibly confusing your Coast Guard Cutters (USCGC) with your Coast and Geodetic Survey Ships (USC&GS)!

The USC&GS ships were never part of the armed forces, the Coast Guard (and former Revenue Cutter Service) were always an armed force.  They were always surveyors and now belong to NOAA.

Tricky! I tried looking on a list of Clydside ships: http://www.clydesite.co.uk/clydebuilt/shipview.asp  but no luck.
It looks a lot like Strasbans, but there's no cross over the 't', if that is what the second letter is. Sorry!  :(

It looks more like Skasbans/Skarbans - Skarban is a current family name, but I can't any ship that looks anything like that.
