And one more question - is there a separate tutorial for transcribing?  I can only find a very short and not terribly helpful one which comes up as four little boxes and is all over in no time.  If there's something else, how do I get to it?

Nothing else yet, but I agree that more explanation is needed.

I had a page with some boxes already drawn - I transcribed the entries as a whole as they were interesting.  I then wanted to transcribe the dates separately, but couldn't draw a box within the existing boxes to enable me to do so.

[Thanks for this Bob! - a grateful moderator  :D]

I've found that you can start the new box in a 'blank' area, or draw it completely in a blank area and then drag it over the existing box(es). This is a feature of the existing interface, too.

And an observation - I can't myself see the attraction of marking without transcribing - but I suppose it does provide a division of labour which might suit some.

I rather like just doing the marking.  ;) :D

Just saying, in marking there is a good zoom toggle.

In general, it would be very very helpful to have some way of seeing what I've transcribed - could there be a mark added to the box in some way?  I have a suspicion that when I clicked on 'Transcribe this page now' I wasn't offered everything I'd marked to be transcribed but had no way of knowing.  It may be that enough people had already transcribed some of the entries - but I'm doubtful as I'm on a ship which doesn't seem to have had much done yet (Helen Snow - chosen for the name ...)
I tried transcribing a box, going back to Marking, then clicking to transcribe again - and you are right, there is a problem.  The only apparent difference is I get told "no more the transcribe, go back to Marking" very briefly before being given a blank box in which to transcribe a second time.  Not good.

A more general question - is it of value to the scientists to transcribe every record of wind direction and strength when they are quite general directions (Light breezes from the WSW sort of thing)?  If it is, I will, but there can be a lot of them ....

"Light breezes" is not at all vague - I think we have to add this to the interface someplace.  It is the original Beaufort Scale that Beaufort later translated into numbers.  Mariners used those phrases to give precise information of which sails to use how.  And you can see what they are in the Beaufort numbers we have been using for the last 5 years here.  http://forum.oldweather.org/index.php?topic=843.msg53365#msg53365

Something we really really need is an 'I've finished with this page' option.  I've worked out that you have to go right through all the questions answering 'no' every time until you get to the end, but I suspect many newcomers are just going to get very frustrated that having marked and/or transcribed everything there is to do, there seems no way of saying so and moving on.

Also, having chosen to 'mark' it seems odd to be being given only pages which are already marked up - surely the point of choosing mark is to mark up pages which haven't yet been done?

Also, another example of the difficulty of transcribing large boxes (it was already drawn when I got the page).  Once again the box I was typing in was invisible, off the bottom of the page, and in addition the whole page was flicking and shaking as I typed - very distracting.

[Asking HelenJ if the final paragraph problem is still the case - 4.10.15; if so = needs listing]

Since each page has to be marked by x people, you will see their marks. If you pick pages that are further along, they will not yet be marked.
If everything necessary is marked, you don't need to redo it.

I hope this makes sense ;)

Yes, that makes some sense, but would be worth including in a more detailed tutorial.

Also, how is it possible to pick pages further along?

Use this to bring up the scrolling list of pages to choose from:

Someone has been busy, but page 10 is currently unmarked.
Keep in mind that those marked pages you see still need to be marked and/or confirmed as done before they are dropped off the list. (Just like in OW ;))

A more detailed tutorial/guide is in the works ::)

I only get the first three pages when I bring up this list - is there some secret to how to get it to scroll, or perhaps this is something which isn't working yet in Firefox?

[Answer: this appears to be fixed by today 4.10.15

The buttons appear and work just fine for me in Firefox, and I don't even have to zoom out (or in).

So maybe it has to do with your version of Firefox - or your screen size. I have 1600*900.

You can also hide the marks made by other people.
