OK - my full list of problems.  I note that I have been having some connectivity issues recently so I waited to walk my computer to Starbucks and get known good connections before ascribing them to the interface and not my set up.  I use Windows7 Home Premium and Chrome.  (Positive ramblings and discoveries added.)

I am absolutely not allowed to sign in.  The "Hello Guest" line lights up when I roll over it but is otherwise dead.Checked - problem fixed by 3.10.15

After marking a bookplate on a flyleaf, I clicked "trancribe this page" (which worked perfectly on other pages) for an artwork description.  All functions went blank leaving me only with the background picture.

[Still O/S 3.10.15 - on mods list]

Tried that again on another ship, getting this time a fancy title page put by the printer.  This time I got the description box just fine, but since the artwork goes the length of the page and that box appears at the bottom, I had to type blind and then scroll down to correct - it bounced back to the top the first letter I typed.  (didn't capture that transcribe url in time.)

listed by mods - not known as resolved 3.10.15

By the way, the "toggle pan and zoom" works excellently for extending marking boxes around objects too large to fit on the laptop screen entirely - using those toggle buttons instead of the browser scroll keeps the box active while you scroll so you can extend it for the whole object.  Just the bouncing effect of entering in the transcribe box afterward irritates.
listed. no fix yet by 3.10.15

Also newspaper clippings taped in count as Art - there is a "clipping" choice.  I used the toggle function to enlarge the clipping so I can read it - it was a full crew list as published by the newspaper when they left port.  Good news when I clicked "transcribe this" is, the box drawn around the clipping immediately shrank with the clipping - it knows the true size of the object, and is not a distorted as when the browser zoom is used.  Bad news is, the transcribe page for the item does NOT have a "toggle pan and zoom" function, and the clipping snaps back to the tiny size I cannot read.  Using the browser zoom here doesn't work at all - the transcribe-in box enlarges but the clipping remains untouched.  I could click "start discussion on subject" and browser enlarge it there to transcribe, but that is clunky.

Well.....Laura told me last night that the site is only optimized for Chrome and Safari, so far. So when I use Firefox I can only see a few ships. So I downloaded Chrome.

I'll wait until Firefox is usable before trying it out - otherwise it's going to be hard to tell which problems are because I'm using Firefox and which are more general problems.

Nothing comes up when I select the Newport 1893 'Mark' button (no 'Transcribe' available yet). The 'More info' link does work. Chrome and Firefox on a Mac.

[listed by mods:checked - still missing at 3.10.15]

I'll give it a try.

Newport 1893 doesn't come up for me either. Given that it is one of the very few without the transcribe button, I don't think it came up for anyone.

William Baylies 1906 is, currently, the only other one that has only Mark, but that works normally.

Re using "bad page"

I did it before so I know this isn't only on one ship.  I'm making notes this time, marking on #ElizaAdams. This is still as 'Guest' as I can't sign in, and on Chrome.

First page is blank, hit "bad page" and "next".
     http://whaling.oldweather.org/#/mark?group_id=560466483937640006140100
Message now says, "You've marked this page as BAD.  Thanks for flagging the issue! Press DONE to continue."
Except 'DONE' is not available, the only choice I can make is 'NEXT', which simply moves me from 'Date' to 'location'.  The only way to save my 'bad page' status is keep on hitting 'next' until I run out of choices and find 'DONE' under 'Event' and 'Art'.

Regarding vanishing work

Again on , I worked my way thru page 2, making the written name an event and noticing the bookplate had already been marked as an art.
http://whaling.oldweather.org/#/mark?group_id=560466483937640006140100

I then clicked "Transcribe this page" and all working material vanished, leaving only the background.
http://whaling.oldweather.org/#/transcribe/560466433937640006010000/560466483937640006170100

I thought my marking hadn't been saved, but I was wrong.  When I went back to entry page, chose that ship and page to mark, both were not marked just fine.  So I went straight to "Transcribe this page" and again all working material vanished, leaving nothing.

After posting the above, I went back and click "transcribe" letting it send me random boxes from random ships.  Did 4 or 5 just fine. Then after clicking 'Done' again, the screen wen blank again, leaving only background.  This time with a non-specific url: http://whaling.oldweather.org/#/transcribe - so I refreshed the page, and it came back up with another perfectly good whaling activity box to describe.

This continued to happen every 4 to 6 transcription entries. So it is not necessarily connected to a particular button or ship, but seems to happen only in transcribe, not marking.

I was working my way down a page using the mark-transcribe-mark method, and was about a third of the way thru with the transition between marking and transcribing very smooth.  And them it got caught and could only vanish if asked to transcribe a box.  The "Transcribe this page now" button was never used.

I'm trying to work out how to get a page link for forum posts, and Randi offered this:

In mark mode before you click on the options to the right you can get the page link in the normal way.

I did this for a page (Horatio, Page 10) and the only link I see is this, from the address bar (right clicking on the image doesn't offer an image link):

http://whaling.oldweather.org/#/mark?group_id=5604664a3937640006da0100

Which doesn't return Page 10 when I paste it into a new browser page.

Has anyone tried the site in Internet Explorer? I've just tried in IE11 and get only a blank grey page, but as I never use IE and I know my install of it is a bit broken, that may just be me.

[listed by mods - thanks for the reply Kevin! : Note to Danny252 - ?still a problem at 3.10.15 = see http://forum.oldweather.org/index.php?topic=4424.msg117121#msg117121]

Yes - the site is currently not optimized for IE or Firefox (only Chrome and Safari). I get the same result with IE.

Page 4 of the initial info window:
  • 'About' link - does work, but when you backspace on your browser it takes you back to the first page of the info window pages, rather than to page 4. fixed by 3.10.15
  • 'blog' link not yet attached to blog. when you backspace on your browser it takes you back to the first page of the info window pages, rather than to page 4. Ummm - blog's gone walkabout! listed by mods...
  • ('talk' link - not linked up yet) fixed by 3.10.15

Not labeled 'forum', labeled 'Reference Library'.  No way any newbie is going to guess that exists.

Hi, I've been going through marking some of the pages for Beluga. I've noticed that after clicking the 'Transcribe this page now!' button, it doesn't allow me to transcribe all of the boxes that I've marked. I have to loop around 2-3 times before all the boxes are transcribed.
