Bad reference links
« on: January 15, 2016, 10:04:14 pm »
Reference sites sometimes disappear or reorganize...
If you find links that don't work, please post them here.

Naval History and Heritage Command (http://www.history.navy.mil/) seems to have changed some of their links again.

First we had: Enlisted Ratings in U.S. Navy, 1775-1969 at http://www.history.navy.mil/faqs/faq78-3.htm
then we had Ratings and the Evolution of Jobs in the Navy at http://www.history.navy.mil/browse-by-topic/organization-and-administration/ranks/enlisted-personnel/ratings-and-the-evolution-of-jobs-in-the-navy.html.

Now we have: Compilation of Enlisted Ratings and Apprenticeships, U.S. Navy, 1775 to 1969 at http://www.history.navy.mil/research/library/online-reading-room/title-list-alphabetically/c/enlisted-ratings-in-u-s-navy-1775-1969.html

These are a few I've noticed that have gone. Usually I modify the names in the bookmarks so they aren't too long or too vague:

US Navy and Marine Officers: 1778-1900
http://www.history.navy.mil/books/callahan/index.htm

US Navy ship names
http://www.history.navy.mil/photos/sh-usn/usn-name.htm

Abbreviations Used for Navy Enlisted Ratings
http://www.history.navy.mil/faqs/faq78-2.htm#anchor12760

USN Philippine Campaign Medal

Sigh - we just reset every link to NHHC. ::)

Michael:
US Navy and Marine Officers: 1778-1900
http://www.history.navy.mil/books/callahan/index.htm
This is what I get today:
http://www.history.navy.mil/browse-by-topic/organization-and-administration/historical-leadership/navy-and-marine-corps-officers-1775-1900.html
It can also be found on the mirror site http://www.ibiblio.org/hyperwar/NHC/Callahan/

They no longer have photos-by-ship, there is no replacement url for this one.  If you have their image number for any photo, search their site for that.  Photography is broken up into groups and can be found at http://www.history.navy.mil/our-collections/photography.html and art can be found at http://www.history.navy.mil/search.html?q=art

Best bet for finding any photo in NHHC is to go to NHHC home page and search for 'shipname image' or 'shipname photo'. (http://www.history.navy.mil/)

Alternate: a mirror site rescued the photos but has rather poor search engines - it will give you photo ID numbers and a working url for the photo, but takes patience to go thru.

Long dead and much mourned. :'(

Title still there, different url - I just searched NHHC home for 'Ratings and the Evolution of Jobs' and chose the first of many choices offered, 'United States Navy's World of Work' and got this: http://www.history.navy.mil/research/library/online-reading-room/title-list-alphabetically/u/ratings-and-the-evolution-of-jobs-in-the-navy.html

Ditto search for 'Compilation of Enlisted Ratings and Apprenticeships' which gave me above page as first choice and the previous 'United States Navy's World of Work' as the second choice.  They are two different databases, not one a substitute.  Current url is http://www.history.navy.mil/research/library/online-reading-room/title-list-alphabetically/c/enlisted-ratings-in-u-s-navy-1775-1969.html - they shortened this one.

And you thought any military government-run set up would be simple or easy?  I still think all government departments should have making their own websites an illegal action.  :P
