Happening live on the BBC NOW (Stargazing Live on BBC2) - the huge Jodrell bank telescope is being swung around to inspect possible pulsars detected by citizen scientists through:

https://www.zooniverse.org/projects/zooniverse/pulsar-hunters/home

Have a bash and who knows!?! Move over Jocelyn Bell-Burnell (who will be appearing on tomorrow night's prog)  ;) ;) :D

So excited - I found one!  ;D                                                                               oh rats - just a simulation  ::) :(

I'll give it to the end of the prog at 22:00 hrs...then it's back to the Arctic ocean...

Found this Tweet following up on that - they had another Zoo challenge out, apparently, and are again going into over-production.   ;D

I just got the following email on the subject:

Quote
Hi there,

Two nights ago we launched a brand new astronomy project live on British television. The project is Pulsar Hunters, and we're back on Stargazing Live on BBC 2 tonight at 9pm GMT (when we may have an exciting volunteer discovery to announce!). You have already given us over 1.5 million classifications, but there is plenty more work to be done!

We need your help to go through data from some of the world's largest telescopes and look for rare objects called pulsars. These are the dense, fast-spinning cores of dead stars. They are the size of a city, but around 1.5 times the mass of the Sun. They are also the most powerful magnets we know and they can spin hundreds of times per second. These extreme properties mean we can use them to test Einstein's theory of relativity, pushing our understanding of physics to its limits.

Join the hunt for these amazing phenomena right now at www.pulsarhunters.org

Cheers,

Grant and the Zooniverse Team

Oh Wow - looks like they are done already!

That's it for now! Thanks to your hard work, we've finished searching the dataset for possible pulsars and are now following up on potential discoveries. Stay tuned!

Gosh. Well I guess you need to travel at the speed of light to get around these celestial pit stops...so we might as well work at a matching pace  ;D

If the speed of light is 983,571,088 ft/sec - What is the speed of dark?    ::)

Results are out already - they got one, and there's several more candidates to check!

Thank you, Janet. As I said, I'll be around as a volunteer! More so once I am settled in at my new job, and I can get all my "Zooniverse Team" flair removed from my Talk posts. :-)
