Captains
« on: December 08, 2010, 12:13:40 pm »
Hello

Regrets to Arfon.  I know your fingers are skeletal already, working them right to the bone.

In the absence of a more complex tier of ranks, would it be possible to publish a list of Captains?

I am seeing an ebb in enthusiam with some volunteers.  A little competition might give us a needed lift.

All best and all of you are doing a great job!! (GREAT JOB!!!)

Here's a list of all captains I pulled from the site last night.

https://spreadsheets.google.com/pub?key=0An8yHtxRRKO_dFRHQ01POU8zNC1IMllBdWw2MGpQREE&hl=en&output=html

This is pretty much raw data though. What do you think would be some useful sorts of this list or other data lists (including Lieutenants, etc)?

I agree that it will be a nice boost in friendly competition.  Nice.  Thanks!

From Kipling's Recessional:

The tumult and the shouting dies;
The Captains and the Kings depart:
Still stands Thine ancient sacrifice,
An humble and a contrite heart.
Lord God of Hosts, be with us yet,
Lest we forget lest we forget!

Two ships on my list that could do with some pushy lieutenants are "Orbita" and "Orcoma". Only boring old Armed Merchant Cruisers, but both are there for the taking for would be captains. Coast of Chile anybody? A bit of North Sea patrolling? Jump on board.

:( I lost my captaincy :(

Dazedandconfused must have been taking a breather on another one of his/her ships (and boy there are a lot of them), and since I work full-time, he/she has had time to come back with a vengeance on my ship.

Oh well.

Yeah, you know how it is.  One day you're down, the next day you're throwing the lot of 'em to the sharks.  :)

Although I've just come back from a ten day break from transcribing I found I am still Captain of the Curlew - mind you it's just a light cruiser and is often hanging about in ports.  At the moment we are in Hong Kong and will doubtless return to Singapore yet again in a few days -  I can recognise some of the signs.  Love it though! What a privilege to share that boredom.

I know, the ships and their crews seem to come alive again - even if they are just sitting around showing the flag.

For the last two days my crew have been firing and returning salutes to other vessels in the harbour.  One arrival is French and the other is Portuguese and it must have been quite noisy with the 17 gun, 15 gun and 11 gun salutes.  Please can anyone explain the significance of the various salutes?

Hello Veero

I know what you mean about the signs.  I had a light cruiser, who spent most of her time in port, but when the coal lighters or colliers came around, it meant an end to leave in a tropical port.

All best and keep up the good work.
